CC Has A Monkey On His Back

August 6, 2011

He can say it was his command. He can say he doesn’t need to watch video. He can say it was just an off-night. But until CC can beat the Red Sox this season and be as dominant against them as he’s been against everybody else, he’s not going to help us when it counts. We have to play Boston again and again before this is all over, and we need our ace to step up. Very unfortunate game tonight.

I had to leave for a dinner date when the score was 7-3, but I didn’t have much of an appetite when I got to the restaurant. Ayala was pitching by then and soon after Noesi gave up his runs, and our offense wasn’t in gear at all.

Well, first place was fun while it lasted.

I don’t know why I found this game so discouraging, but I did. Maybe it’s because the Sunday matchup of Beckett-Garcia doesn’t thrill me. Or maybe it was because we should have done a better job against Lackey. Or maybe it was just hard to watch our best pitcher cave.

I just hope tomorrow night goes better – if the game is even played. It’s pouring here in CT so I’m assuming the rain will make its way up to Boston.

Huuughes-less

April 8, 2011

I’m sorry to be saying that about our Phil, but sometimes you have to call it as it is and he’s been useless. I just wish somebody could figure out what’s wrong with him. When Rothschild, Girardi and Hughes himself shrug their shoulders and go, “Hopefully it’ll come,” it doesn’t inspire me with confidence. What, exactly, do they expect to come? Arm strength? Velocity? Better pitch selection? I mean he was throwing these right down the middle of the plate.

Very, very worrisome.

Boone Logan? Worse than worrisome. A lefty specialist who can’t get lefties out? Not good.

Colon, on the other hand, played the part of the wily veteran and certainly gave the Yankees a chance to win the game. But who would have predicted a Tex error? Not me.

Great job by Gardner after a slow start this season. Another record-breaking homer for A-Rod. Another hit by Jeter (for those of you still in the running for the book).

But here’s a concern. Why aren’t the Yankees scoring late in games? I loved the way they kept putting runs on the board today, but has anyone else noticed that their bats have been silent in the late innings?

As for the Red Sox, they finally got a win. Woohoo. Without meaning to sound like a bad sport, the Yankees really handed them that one. Lackey wasn’t much better than Hughes. And he looked so nasty the way he was scowling at his own players. Yech.

P.S. Here’s an email I got from from MLB. Pay attention if you live in the NY area and want to win free tickets to the Stadium!

Tomorrow, the guys in the recently unveiled MLB Fan Cave are giving away 1,000 free tickets for all three games in the upcoming Yankees-Orioles series this week. To win free tickets to Yankee Stadium, fans need to follow Pepsi Max (@PepsiMAX), Caveman Mike O’Hara (@mikeyoh21) and his sidekick, Ryan Wagner (@rwags614), on Twitter.  Starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning, the three accounts will be driving fans to various locations around the city.  When fans get to the location, they will be given a clue as to where to go to score the free tickets.  The three accounts will be providing clues throughout the day.

Fenway Fun

April 7, 2011

I missed today’s finale against the Twins, but I saw the replay of Swisher’s takeout of their second baseman. Ouch. I’m glad nobody was mad at him for the slide. It looked “clean” to me. I also caught Soriano’s outing; I guess he really does prefer pitching in close games. And Mo. Seriously. Four performances and four saves. Should we expect anything less?

Apparently, A.J. pitched well, which is always a relief. And Jeter had two more hits, for those whose contest entries still look promising.

But now it’s onto tomorrow and the Red Sox’s season opener at home. (In my home we call Fenway “the Chowda House.”)

So many intriguing questions about this game….

  1. Will Hughes continue to struggle or will his velocity miraculously come back?
  2. Will Russell Martin jump into The Rivalry, having spent years embroiled in Dodgers-Giants?
  3. Will Garcia be our long man if Hughes falters, since he got rained out on Wednesday? (And will it be painful to watch?)
  4. Will Jeter go 5-for-5? (Or at least 2-for4?)
  5. Will John Lackey make a lot of unpleasant faces?

Most of all, what I’m wondering is will the Red Sox stay mired in their little slump? Or will they bust out and score 1,000 runs?

Guess which scenario I’m hoping for….
