The Yankees beat the Mets two out of three games at Citi Field this weekend. And yet it’s last night’s loss in the finale that bugs me. Well, it bugs me that the offense wasn’t exactly robust throughout the series, but it especially bugs me that we were shut out. Watching guys like Stanton and Sanchez flail at the ball is depressing. And what happened to Didi? How do you forget how to swing at a baseball?
I know, I know. The big guys will get hot one of these days and go on a tear. But right now? I’m not happy with them.
And then there’s Tanaka’s injury. He could be on the DL awhile. Montgomery’s lost to us this season. Doesn’t Cashman have to go out and get a starter? Like now? Or is he thinking of bringing up more AAA kids?
If the Yanks are serious contenders this year, we need starting pitching and consistent offense if not always in the middle of the order then throughout the lineup.
Yeah, last night left me with a bad taste. I need to snap out of it.
Hey Jane. I’m hoping some of these positive vibes will rub off the stench of last night’s loss. We’re still in first place despite struggles from Stanton, Sanchez, and Didi. Stanton actually has been turning it around a bit recently while Sanchez and Didi (and Bird to an extent) are too talented to continue like this. Gleyber and Andujar are fantastic and have stepped up as rookies to assist and carry the offense. Gardner bounced back from his earlier slump. Judge is still as consistent as ever. The offense is still the best in baseball despite some inconsistent performances from some of our guys.
The main concern as you said is the pitching. I’m absolutely sure that Cashman and the front office team is doing their due diligence to scour the market and teams to get us another starter. But at least for now, Gray has slowly but steadily been improving. CC has been fine for the most part. Severino is still our ace. German has done about as well as you could expect from a fifth starter that’s a rookie. Oh yeah and the bullpen is becoming consistent again and back to being a strength (Betances was just filthy the previous night).
I hope this helped somewhat. It could always be worse. Just look at the Mets. We have a bright future for this season and for several years to come while theirs is in doubt.
Thanks for the wakeup call, Leo. You did snap me out of my funk by reminding me of the positives. You’re so right about Sonny Gray and the rest of the starters, as well as about the rookies. Gleybar and Andujar have been superb. I feel better now!
Glad to hear it, Jane! It’s the least I can do and fellow Yankee fans should stick together to uplift each other. The rebuild could’ve been a long and painful process as it usually is for most teams but ours wasn’t. For that, I’ll continue to be grateful. I fully trust Cashman and his front office team.
Agree about how great the rebuilding process has been relative to other teams, Leo. Do I fully trust Cashman? Probably not – he’s still the guy who gave us Pavano, among others – but for now I hope he’ll land us a solid starter.
Good morning, Jane. Our boys won another series against the Rays. Too bad we lost yesterday on Old Timer’s Day. Is it just me or does it seem we lose almost all the time on OTD? Regardless, I love the tradition that only the Yankees do best. I missed it due to work and also being a little caught up in the World Cup fever that’s swept my area. Have you been watching any of it, Jane?
Hi Leo. Sorry I didn’t do a post after the Rays series but I never got to my computer last night. Great winning the series, but disappointing to lose the finale, especially on OTD and especially since CC pitched more than well enough to get a win. Stanton seems to be increasingly booed by the Stadium crowd because of his inability to hit in clutch situations, and his answers to the beat reporters after the game get more and more monosyllabic. He said he won’t adjust his swing as he has in the past. When asked why, he said, “Because I don’t want to.” All righty then. I haven’t watched the World Cup. Tennis is my game and I’m eagerly awaiting Wimbledon!
Losing is more of a bummer when it feels like you should have won, or at least could have. I am concerned about the Yankee bats, which are in a bit of a slump. Even Andujar has cooled off. I have full confidence they will get hot again but there may be a rough patch in between. June is an intense month for them with so many games and little time off. So far they are holding their own. Last night’s win, following the loss of the suspended game, has eased my mind a bit. Sure wish the Red Sox would go on a losing streak. I still need that voodoo doll.
It is amazing how much better Stanton does away from Yankee Stadium. I really wish both he and Sanchez would be more selective about which pitches they swing at. On Sunday Sanchez watched a pitch that was in the middle of the zone go by and then swung at two in the dirt. Stanton does the same thing – a lot. It seems like Paul O’Neil often see what our hitters are doing wrong so maybe they ought to take a listen after the game.
For now we are back in first place but Seattle has been hot. Will we douse the flames or be consumed? Praying for the former!
Losing is such a bummer when you feel the game was winnable, Audrey, I agree. Hicks seems to be on a little tear. And Stanton had a good game last night. But you’re so right about his hitting on the road versus at the Stadium. Are the fans getting to him? I’ll be getting a good luck at all of them when I go to the game here in St. Pete Friday night. (It’ll be Rays-Yankees at the Trop so look for me on the visitor’s side – I got good seats!) I’d love to put some distance between us and the Red Sox, so if the voodoo doll helps, bring it on! Seattle will be interesting to play. They’re doing well and German is still a wild card for me. The problem with these kids, including that last one who came straight from AA, is that they’ll all have innings limits as we go deeper into the season. We’re going to need a veteran arm (I know I sound like a broken record).
