All Rise

June 7, 2018

I’m back. Boxes are gone. So is the dreaded packing paper. And I can actually walk around my new place in FL without tripping over something.

So….that means my head is clear for Yankees baseball, and last night’s contest against Toronto was a nail biter. Sonny Gray. Wow. Suddenly, he’s Cy Young? A shutout for eight innings, giving up only two hits to the Jays? “Pretty, pretty good,” as Larry David would say.

With both teams stymied on offense and into extra innings, it was Judge who broke through with a two-run homer, putting the Yanks on the board. Very exciting. Stanton’s solo shot gave us insurance. And the pen made the win possible.

The weather has been wrecking havoc on the Yankees’ schedule and today is another off-day, so I hope they’re ready for this weekend’s series against the Mets. It would be nice to pick up some games on the Red Sox and get back out in front.

Good morning, Jane. Glad to see you are back now. Gray was fantastic last night shutting out Toronto and we need him to keep this up. Consistency from him and every other starter not named Severino will go a long way for us. Montgomery is going to have TJS. Poor guy as he was looking to continue his success from last season and now we won’t see him for awhile. This just makes it more urgent that we get a good starter by the trade deadline. Get it done Cash! We have faith in you with all the good trade chips this team has to make something happen.

Oh another thing, Jane, maybe work your magic once more and write an angry Facebook blog post on Sanchez as you did with Stanton. He’s struggling mightily right now and while thankfully we’ve still been winning, I’m selfish and want everyone on this offense to contribute lol.

You’re right, Leo. I need to get on Sanchez. He’s been AWOL on offense. I wonder if Romine’s success is getting in his head. I agree about Montgomery’s TMS requiring my urgency on Cashman’s part to get a good starter (Cole Hamels!).

Good morning, Jane. The Subway Series started off well with a win and I wish I could enjoy it but Tanaka got hurt last night running the bases. He pulled both hamstrings and the booth is comparing it to Wang which freaks me out. Let’s hope that isn’t the case and hope for the best. Poor deGrom. He deserves so much better. He should be with us but too bad that’s just a pipe dream since the Mets will never trade with us.

Hi Leo. Great win last night against deGrom, but yes, the Tanaka problem is a concern. Maybe he just had cramps and not real hamstring problems? I guess we’ll find out. What puzzles me — Wang’s injury aside — is don’t pitchers do running drills all the time? If not, they should. It’s ridiculous to think they can make it through to the world series without having to be on base!

I, too, have recovered from my move, Jane – my move into Grandmahood, lol. My head is still full of my precious little guy and my son and I have lots of plans for turning him into the biggest Yankee fan in the world including a new jersey every birthday from Nana Audrey, In the meantime, I still have been paying attention and enjoying our Yankees. The Judge home run in Toronto was classic, especially as it played out alongside the story of the little boy sitting in right field holding his “All Rise” sign every time Judge came up to bat. The joy on that kid’s face when Judge finally came through – it was magic and the best of baseball. Am I wrong to feel there is more of a connection between baseball fans and their players than there is in other sports? That’s probably just my baseball bias showing but sometimes it feels so personal!

As much as I would like a Janer (tonight may be a good opportunity for one) these tight games have been exciting. Walk-offs like the one we had against Houston at home aren’t possible if you are trouncing the other team and walk-offs are so fun! I don’t enjoy the hand-wringing it takes to get there but what a sweet reward it is. Speaking of walk-offs, Brett Gardner is one awesome player. I am very glad veterans like him and CC anchor this team.

Grandmahood. Haha, Audrey. I’m sure your move there has been joyous and life changing, but welcome back. Loved that kid (and Judge’s home run) in Toronto. I can’t speak to the connection between the fans and baseball, relative to basketball or football, because I’m not a diehard fan of either. I do follow tennis passionately and there are some players I feel strongly connected to. As for the Mets series, walk-offs are exciting, but let’s blow them out today so there’s no nail biting. I’m worried about Tanaka even though he’s supposed to have “mild” hamstring strains. We need starting pitching! (And yes, Gardner and CC are essential along with the Baby Bombers.)
