A Walk-Off Saves the Yanks

June 22, 2016

Starlin Castro had never had a walkoff to win a ballgame, but he had one this afternoon to salvage the Yankees’ home series against the Rockies. The win wasn’t pretty, but it did show some grit on the part of a team that was about to go down to defeat for the second day in a row against a team they really should beat.

CC wasn’t as sharp as he’s been and he rolled his ankle in the process – not a good day for him. In fact, when I saw the score – that the Rockies had scored a bunch of runs while the Yankees’ bats were silent – I figured we were doomed. But there was a comeback in store and Chapman held the opposition in check for the save.

Little victories. That’s all we can expect this season, I’m afraid. But even little victories have their pleasures and I’m sure Castro is celebrating his big moment. He deserves it.

I keep saying to myself “This will be the game that turns this team around.” Will this comeback win do it for the Yanks? Probably not, but hope never dies.

On another topic, my dad uttered some Yankee fan heresy in our conversation on Father’s Day and I thought I would pass it along and get everyone’s opinions on this. Dad think Didi is better than Jeter. He says his range on the field is much greater and his offense is potent, too. What think you?

On the Didi question, Audrey, I think your father is comparing apples and oranges in a way. Is he talking about Jeter at the end of his career or throughout? My opinion is that Jeter in his prime could outhit Didi blindfolded, and his range and instinctive gifts (think: “the flip”) were great. As he got older, his range deteriorated. He slowed down, didn’t get to balls. So yeah, Didi today is “better” than Jeter was in his last years. But better overall? No way. Jeter will be a first ballot Hall of Famer. Didi will not. End of story!

I don’t know if Didi is better than Jeter but he is wonderful, particularly defensively. And a grand slam from Headley – you wouldn’t expect that! Why couldn’t they have done this the night before when I was there. Oh well. I’m worried about C.C., Jane. He’s been so solid and consistent this season…we definitely need him. We’ll see what happens. Night off for the boys…a good thing. GO REST YANKEES!!!

That Headley grand slam was epic, Diane. Never saw that coming! I hope CC will rebound. He’s been too good to fall apart now.

You could be right about my dad’s comparison references, Jane. His memory is not what it used to be, something he himself says all the time. I was not watching Yankee baseball back when Jeter was at the point Didi is at now so I have no opinion. I’m just glad Didi is doing so much to help this team, which needs all the help it can get!

Didi has done a great job, Audrey. I agree with that!
