Wasn’t Martin Prado supposed to be the Yankees’ second baseman now that Chase Headley is back? Wasn’t David Phelps supposed to be either a back-end starter or the long man out of the bullpen? They were both pretty good, so I’m still scratching my head over the trade today that sent them to the Marlins for a bunch of guys I’ve never heard of. Not that my knowledge of the Marlins or any National League team is anything to brag about, but why? Was Nathan Eovaldi really worth shipping out Prado and Phelps? He’s young and durable but his numbers aren’t great and I’d rather have Scherzer in the rotation (duh).
As for the other two we got, fine. Whatever. I hope Cashman knows what he’s doing. Domingo German sounds like a very interesting prospect, but I wouldn’t mind winning a few games in the near term, as in 2015.
Hi Jane,
Long time reader of the blog also a Marlin and Yankee fan here. Eovaldi underachieved last year and will be a solid addition to the back end of the pitching rotation, if nothing else he will be a younger version of Phelps. I am not sure what the plan is when Nova comes back though. Martin Prado is not irreplaceable offensively for the Yankees and I put my trust in the Yankees scouting and development on that one. I think the Yankees are more concerned about defensive ability at the 2nd base position. The Yankees also received a player named Garrett Jones who will be a nice left handed bat off the bench that can play 1B and corner outfield. You’ll appreciate him if Tex or Beltran misses any extended period this coming season.
Hi Andrew! Welcome and so glad you’ve been a reader of the blog. Sorry I didn’t post a reply right away. Still having technical problems getting notifications of comments, but hoping to resolve soon. Anyhow, thanks for shedding some light on Eovaldi. His numbers weren’t great last season, true, but if he’s a younger version of Phelps I’m ok with that. And Tex and Beltran will surely need backups. I do wish they weren’t injury prone but I guess at this point in their careers, it’s a reality we’ll have to deal with.
