Mark Teixeira made it a tie ballgame in the bottom of the ninth against the Red Sox tonight, and then Chase Headley sent the Yanks to a game win and a series win. I was on my feet cheering.
The Yankees may not win another series this season, who knows, but all I wanted for them was to get out of their offensive doldrums and play entertaining baseball and they did. The Red Sox are only a shell of their former selves, except for Ortiz who just keeps hitting bombs year after year, but taking two of three at home was fun anyway. I loved how excited the players got tonight after Headley’s walkoff, like a bunch of little kids. So cute.
As for Headley himself, he was a nice pickup. I wonder what’ll happen to him when A-Rod comes back next year (theoretically). Come to think of it, how will the Yankees deal with A-Rod coming back? (Hal said he’s looking forward to it. Yeah, sure.) In the meantime, Headley has played a solid third base and had a few timely hits.
The weekend series against the Royals should be interesting, with Sunday’s Jeter Farewell ceremony certain to be a tear jerker. I still can’t imagine the Yankees without him, but it’s clear that it’s the right time for him to head off into his new life. I have no doubt that he’ll succeed in whatever arena he pursues. He’s The Natural.
A Rod who? Who is this rod you speak of?
3,000 miles away, Jane, another woman jumped to her feet and cheered when the ball left Headley’s bat, too. What fun! I love walk-offs, even though getting to that point can be so nerve-wracking. Maybe that’s what makes it even sweeter. that and watching the guys frolic and frisk around home plate.
Even though Boston is a shell of its former self, I often wonder why since there are still a number of players who get to the Yankees so it is still sweet to beat them. KC is much more than its former self, however, so this series may be more challenging than those in the past. Still, we took it to them pretty hard a couple of weeks ago on the road. Let’s hope we still have their number.
My husband thinks that one of the reasons Jeter chose this year to end his career with The Yankees is because he could leave without A-Rod on the team. I don’t know what to think. It was a very exciting game – everyone was so happy with the win, but it looked like Headley wasn’t thrilled about getting hit with the fluid. Anyway, happy to see them pull this one out, especially when Big Poopy hit back-to-back home runs. Hopefully they can keep this going. GO YO-YO-YANKEES!!!
A-Rod Smith, Peg? Or A-Rod Jones? I can’t seem to remember his full name. :)
Good for you for staying up to watch until the end, Audrey. Glad it didn’t go into extra innings for you since Yankees-Red Sox games last a long time regardless of who’s on the teams.
I’m sure Jeter’s thrilled not to have the distraction of A-Rod this year, Diane, but he was retiring one way or the other. Like Mo, he probably wanted to play one more year after sitting out with an injury.
