CC, The Mood Elevator

April 29, 2012

He pitched like an ace today and made me forget all about the fact that Garcia’s going to the pen (I don’t really want him there any more than I want him in the rotation but whatever). He even made me forget that Swisher, following his big two-homer game yesterday, now has a strained hamstring. Well, he almost made me forget about that. Does it seem to anybody else that Swish has hammy issues a lot?

CC was efficient for the most part and exuded confidence, and I never felt like the game was in jeopardy even though the score was close much of the time.

Speaking of the score, I should have had my 10 run-er in this one. The Yankees offense had SO many chances to knock in runs and failed. But it was great to see Cano hitting the ball with more authority and Grandy and Jeter just keep showing what they can do and Chris Stewart has turned out to be a nice pickup; CC clearly likes pitching to him.

All in all, a very enjoyable win today. Always great to take a series, and taking one from the Tigers is especially sweet.

I’m *very* glad the pitching held up. Because we should have had about 15 runs in the first 7 innings, and only had 3. MUST improve hitting with RISP.

Well, a win’s a win. Can’t be too upset. Hope Swish’s hamstring injury isn’t going to be one of the nagging/going to bother him all season types.

    On to the next one.

You’re right about those 15 runs, Sean K. But I did like the sac flies/RBIs by Cano and Granderson. I worry a little about Swisher because I seem to recall that the last time he had the injury it hung on awhile.

He sure lifted my mood yesterday! It was great to see CC being CC and feeling pretty secure the whole game. Wow – we actually led the whole game – what a concept! D-Rob was also his usual amazing self and Jeter with those two infield hits – that takes a lot of hustle from an old guy. The big Fail with RISP was frustrating but we still managed to eke out six runs, which was our average for this series. Not bad against Detroit. Now we need to go on a long win streak against Baltimore and KC. Five or six out of the next seven would be nice, though I’ll accept seven out of seven if that’s what we’re given:).

We did lead the whole game and it was such a nice change, Audrey. No need to keep playing catch up. D-Rob was great as usual and you’re so right about Jeter. I loved seeing him called safe at home to score that run. He hustles with the best of them and I hope the young players are taking note. I never look ahead, as you know, but I like your scenarios.

Well…so good to win a series against a good team and recent tormentor.

In a way, it seemed that the series turned before it even started, with the escapades of one Delmon Young. His postseason HRs in the ALDS still hurt; glad that CC (and everyone) didn’t have to deal with him.

Not sure what to make of this pitching staff. Right now, it feels like a recreation of the famous “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain” — the Yanks have “CC and Nova…win series, get ovah” — i.e., two outa three ain’t bad, if they can just have 3-game series with lotsa rainouts from now until Andy’s Back to Save Us. Not that I don’t have confidence in any of the other starters…but I don’t. Oops — KC is a 4-gamer? Uh-oh.

But first, Bal’mer. They’re feeling awfully good about themselves these days. Saw their 5-run comeback in the 9th inning yesterday (against Our Boy Bartolo and Grant BallFour) and said uh-oh again. Even Son #1, the lifelong O’s fan, has stopped saying “they stink” every time I pay them a compliment. With Kuroda and “Boom Boom” Hughes throwing the first two games (notice I didn’t say “pitching”), hope Our Boyz have kept their hittin’ shoes on…!

The Orioles are always tough even when they do stink, Dave. Our games with them seem to last as long as the Yanks-Red Sox games do with lots of scoring. And, as you say, they’re full of confidence at the moment. I hope Kuroda and (gulp) Hughes will pull it together.

Great win – CC came through when we REALLY needed the pick-me-up. I’m failing at trying to scale back my baseball-watching (to save my marriage). The games have just been SO GOOD! Last night’s Rays/Rangers game really had a playoff feel – a lot of games have had playoff feels. And it’s only April! (You guys who only watch the Yankees are so lucky….I admit it, I have a baseball abuse problem!) Early heads up: I’m going to the next ESPN Sunday Night Game – Phillies & Nats. Anyone listening from the DC Area going to that one? And of course our beloved Yanks visit D.C. in June (15th-17th). I’m going to two of three. SO EXCITED! Okay, I know it’s early, but it’s something great to look forward to!

So cool that you’ll be at the Sunday night game, Ruth! Ordinarily, I wouldn’t watch Phillies-Nats, but since you’ll be there I’ll have to at least check out parts of it. I hope you have good seats. Ditto for the series against the Yanks in June.

Ruth, if your husband really loves you he’ll find some compromise that lets you feed your baseball jones.

Here’s hoping you find a way to work things out. [beaming positive thoughts…]

Onward and upward… let’s keep the momentum going.

Thanks, Sean. I’m dramatizing a bit…marriage not really on the ropes…but it could be if I watched as much baseball as I want! I’m still hoping I can turn hubby into an addict, like me. I’ve made tremendous strides so far, but don’t think I’ll ever get him as fanatical as yours truly. That’s why it’s good to have this support group to vent to..LOL!

Have fun at all your games, Ruth! How fun! I just purchased tickets for the Yankees-Angels game on July 15. I don’t know if I want Albert Pujois back to being Albert Pujois by then or not! I guess he can be back to being himself as long as A-Rod, Tex, Grandy, Cano and every other Yankees is at the top of their games, too. It’d be cool to see Pujois perform but not at the expense of our Yankees.

I’ll make a note of that game, Audrey, and maybe I can be there when I’m on the east coast in July.
