Our Latest Hero

April 17, 2012

Photo: AP/Seth Wenig

Actually, there were a lot of heroes in tonight’s entertaining victory over the Twins, but I enjoy giving shout-outs to the new guys. I admit when Chris Stewart came up with a chance to drive in runs in the third, I moaned about Cervelli and Jorge and didn’t give the poor kid a chance.

Wrong!

He came through, and his two-run single seemed to turn the game around.

This one was a tale of two CCs: the mediocre CC in the early innings and the dominant CC the rest of the way. Did he eat some of this in the dugout instead of sunflower seeds?

Whatever did the trick, he seemed to bear down and stop fooling around. And of course he had help both from the offense and defense (not counting A-Rod’s error). Gardner had a good night as did Jeter (again) and Andruw Jones, and I have to hand it to Eduardo Scissorhands for being the best bunter on the team.

I also have to say that for the first time in a looong time I felt sorry for an umpire. When Denard Span started yelling at home plate ump Greg Gibson and then Gardenhire took over the yelling, I said to Michael, “Who’d want to get yelled at like that?” Gardenhire seemed upset about the balk, so it was ironic that Gibson called a balk on CC shortly thereafter and there wasn’t a peep out of Girardi.

For anybody watching on YES, how funny were that bride and groom watching the game? I’m sure it would be a kick to get married at Yankee Stadium, but I’m less sure I’d try to squeeze a big, poofy wedding gown into those seats, even the pricey ones.

Wow, what a difference 24 hours makes!

Not only did the Yankees rebound nicely and get a win [yay], but Boston got [choose one]:

    (a) annhiliated (b) obliterated (c) soul-crushed

by Texas. Which is great as long as they’re doing it to Boston. If they do it to NY I’ll be changing my tune right quick.

But tonight I’m happy. Get ’em again tomorrow!

I read about that Sox-Rangers game, Sean K, and I felt conflicted. Boston is having its pitching problems, no question, but the Rangers are scaaaary and I have no interest in facing them any time soon. But happiness is back after our game tonight. Very fun to watch.

I think Stewart is going to have to do a lot more than just collect a few hits and RBI’s before we forget about Cervelli. I’m surprised he wasn’t booed Opening Day, lol! I hope he can be a very productive back up catcher for us. And being clutch like Cervy is would help too!

I really hope this was CC’s coming out party. We need him to be the ace we all know he is.

A Nunez compliment, Jane? You must’ve had a nice bowl of Captain Crunch yourself! ;P

I was wondering about the bride and groom myself. Did they just get married and decide to head to the Stadium for a pre-honeymoon game? Did they get married at the Stadium? Maybe the guy did one of those proposals in between innings (with everyone shouting, “No!!!”) and then they headed to an in-Stadium chapel to complete the nuptials? Maybe they were just goofing around and decided to go all dressed up (hey, i saw a father-son duo dressed in yankee pinstriped suits at the final game at the old yankee stadium, so it’s possible…)? Or maybe I have a really active imagination? Sorry, never thought of how she was able to sit in a wedding dress in one of those seats (that’s probably because i’ve never worn one. and hope never to. then again i may get drugged up one day by nondescript banditas and shipped to cambodia to be sold to some rich goose rancher or something…. nah, that’s probably the plot to ‘The Hangover 3’ or something, lol!). But I did think of how she got through the turnstiles, and her walk from the car or subway through the streets of The Bronx. That must’ve been a funny sight to see!

    AHEM! Anyways…! Go Yankees!! :D

Couldn’t watch or listen after the second inning last night so I just checked the score on the computer so I was pleasantly surprised about Christ Stewart’s clutch single. So glad CC proved my doubts in him groundless. Hope Tex is better today but it sounds like we were none-the-worse for missing him at first. I never really wanted to sweep the Twins (I don’t want to crush their spirits) but I’ll be happy with 3 out of 4!

Let’s hope the Boston controversy is part of their problem and it carries into this weekend. This weekend I will definitely take a sweep!

YankeeCase, Cervelli is batting way below the Mendoza line in Triple AAA. I think his spirits are broken after being sent down. Meanwhile, Stewart – or, as Girardi calls him, “Stewie” – had a good game and CC looked comfortable throwing to him (in the later innings anyway). Yes, a Nunez compliment! I have to give him props because he’s truly the only member of this team who can bunt properly. He’s fast on the bases too. Now if he can keep his errors under control I’ll really come around. Love your thoughts about the bride and groom, if that’s what they were. Maybe they were just dressing up for some reason. The guy was taking pics of the girl with his little digital camera. You’d think he would have hired a wedding photographer if they’d really gotten married.

The Boston controversy is bound to die down, Audrey, but getting crushed at the hands of the Rangers is another story. If that keeps up, we might see a downtrodden team this weekend. On the other hand, they could be very determined. Plus, there’s the ceremonial stuff at Fenway that’s sure to pick them up.

Boston could be 0-for-the-season and they’d still be up for the Yankees. That’s a rivalry that always gets both teams supercharged. I just hope NY doesn’t let their emotions get out of control and settles down to play baseball. If they do that we can take the series against the Red Sux no prob. If they let all the paegentry and emotion and rivalry stuff get to them and forget to actually play baseball, they could be in trouble, but I’m not concerned. This group seems pretty levelheaded.

Level heads, indeed, Sean K. ‘Tis what they all need. Can’t take the Twins for granted, as they learned (and we were reminded) on Monday.

Yes…nice to see a New Face doing good things. As a sort-of Uniform Number Freak, I was “caught” by the memory that the last Yank I remember getting a clutch hit and wearing #19 was…Aaron ‘F-Bomb’ Boone! There’s surely been others in-between, but since we’ve been talkin’ about him lately, nice coincidence…

Happened to notice on espn.com that they had a listing of The Top 20 Best-Selling MLB Jerseys of 2011. The team with the most was…of course…Our Boyz! Yes, there was Mo at #18, Cano at #17, A-Rod (really) at #15…and at #1, “the ladies’ favorite,” according to the story (sorry if sounding sexist)…The Captain!! Hey, who else could it be, right? Pujols was a mere #3…

The Yankees have had plenty of experience with pomp and circumstance, Sean K. I don’t worry about them forgetting what the goal is when they get to Fenway.

Stewart and Boone share the number, Dave? Cool. May it be a lucky one. And yes, Jeter has the #1 selling jersey. He’s everybody’s fave.

    Bring home the victory, Freya!

Sean K and Jane, I have no doubt Boston will be up for this weekend’s series. Sean, you mention 0-for nothing? The Red Sox literally were 0-for nothing at the beginning of last year if you’ll recall, and they ended up taking two of three from us. So they’ll definitely bring their A game.

Jane I love seeing the quirky characters that show up at the Stadium! Whether it’s bride and groom, or the Asian kid the other day who had his hair up like a certain video game character, or even poor Freddy Sez, rest his soul.

(I did forget to mention in my wedding dress tangent that I would hope to be sold for more than the going rate of 68 cents for the average 6ft Dominican, since I think I’m definitely more than average! Comedy is in the details… Lol)

Well tonight’s game was a bummer. Kuroda didn’t last very long, and we missed opportunities to score. And then we came so close in the end. The bright side for me was that I was in the Audi Suite – it’s climate controlled, with a beautiful vista of the stadium, and a wonderful buffet is included in the price. So that kinda took some of the sting away from the game. But I’d trade all those perks for a win.

I didn’t know there was an Audi Suite, Freya, but it sounds great. I wish you’d seen a win, but I bet you had fun anyhow. The boys almost came back.
