A New Beginning For The Dodgers

March 27, 2012

It makes perfect sense that it was Magic Johnson’s group that ended up buying the team, doesn’t it? A former superstar with the Lakers taking the reins of the city’s other storied franchise creates a nice symmetry to the deal. I wish them all well and say good riddance to the McCourts.

In Yankees news, Joba spoke to the media about his injury and then Cashman spoke to the media about Joba’s injury, and they couldn’t seem to tell the same story about the injury. (Cashman’s version was more gruesome.) What caught my attention, though, was when Joba said he’d been “jumping from trampoline to trampoline” when he destroyed his ankle. Seriously? Did he think he was a circus acrobat? Oh, well. I just hope he has a speedier-than-expected recovery.

And now Granderson has an elbow injury. Swell. The MRI tomorrow will tell the tale, I guess.

Otherwise, spring in Yankeeville is moving right along. Players are being cut from the roster and decisions will be made as to who stays and who goes and who ends up in the starting rotation. And Ibanez continues not to hit. As someone predicted on Twitter today, if Raul keeps up the anemic offense he’ll get a very rude reception at the Stadium. He sounds like a very nice guy, but the boo birds will be out.

Happy Opening Day! I don’t know how to say that in Japanese……

The Magic group buying the Dodgers news has me smiling from ear to ear. Good riddance, McCourts indeed!

Haha, Ruth. But since I don’t follow what goes on in Japan, baseball wise, I’m still in countdown mode.

The only wrinkle is that McCourt wants to buy the surrounding land (he did make his money in parking lots, after all), so we may not be completely done with his taint. But I love that Magic’s group won the bidding.

Yes, this seems to be a good thing…congrats to the L.A. fans, and how nice to have Magic front & center.

However, as an Old Yankee Dog, it’s easy to remember all those dogfights Our Boyz have had with Dem Bums in ancient history. Will we both make some New History together someday soon? Hope so…

Also hard to resist saying that when I first eyeballed your posting, I misread “storied” — in my brain, I read “STOLEN.” Which is apropos for L.A., of course, they having ‘stolen’ every franchise they have/had except for the Angels and the Kings. The Minneapolis Lakers. The Cleveland Rams. But we digress…

And my other comment is, it’s great for the locals to take back their Bums…after all, it ain’t like they were goin’ back to Brooklyn, or anything…

I think Magic will be front and center, Dave. He’s only got a minority stake in the team but I would think he’ll be the face of the organization. And no, they’re not coming back to Brooklyn – ever.

hi jane. i am here with some of the kids from the program i work at. they wanted to say somethings.
yankees suck says one of the boys and asks why do you like them anyway. give up baseball and like basketball or football. now you see why the yankees are a horrible choice.
the other boy, edwin, who has written to you before says, i am starting not to like the yankees any more and i am starting to get more into college basketball and nba basketball and nfl. sorry to disappoint you.
jane, do you see how hard it is to live in boston. these sox fans are rough.
i am so happy that it is opening day soon.

Hi, Barbara. Wave to the kids for me. You can tell the first boy that I do like basketball but not as much as baseball. And please tell Edwin that I’m sorry he doesn’t like the Yankees as much as he used to but I hope he’ll change his mind once the season starts. And yes, you’ve got a tough crowd there!

hey jane. now another boys wants to write to you. he says, do you like the boston bruins? they are better than the new york islanders and new york rangers. also the yankees stink. the boston red sox are beasts. a rod is on steriods. barbara’s office is decorated in everything yankees. she has a derek jeter figure in her office, a don mattingly trophy, about 50 yankee flags, a purple room with a yankee hat and yankee helmet that she got for free at yankee give away days when she was a kid. she also has a yankee snowglobe and a yankee lunch bag and the yankees are her homepage.

Barbara, you can tell the other boy that I’ve never really gotten into hockey but that my husband roots for the NY Rangers. I love the description of your office and all the rest of your Yankees shrine!

YAY!!! JANE!! We were so happy last night and the grin is still on my face! I was all wired up last night. A great day in Dodger history! Is going to be a great Opening Day! Not that they usually not, is just extra special. I got my hotel reservation and tickets for the Dodgers opening up at Petco Park. Is a four game series and I will be there. Then back to the Ravine for Tuesday.

    Celebration!!!!
Going to Ventura this weekend celebratiing two friends birthdays. We are staying Saturday night and driving back Sunday. These are my more less non-baseball fans so who knows when I will see them again once the season starts.
    .
BTW, I am reading “Five O’clock comes early” Is an old baseball book about Bob Welch by Bob Welch and George Vecsey. Is a good read about his alcohol problems and baseball. I am at the point of the 1978 World Series with the Yankees.

Congratulations, Emma! Very happy for you and your friends who’ve stood by the Dodgers through all the mess. I’m sure your opening day will be full of extra excitement this year. I read the Bob Welch book years ago and found it very moving.
