Who Didn’t Love The Jeter 3K/HBO Documentary Tonight

July 28, 2011

Well, I don’t know if non-Yankee fans loved it or even watched it. But for those of us diehards it was a treat.

My highlights:

  1. Jeter running in the bathtub.
  2. Jeter getting his calf rubbed down. (Do they use Ben-Gay or what?)
  3. Jeter at his NYC apartment sharing a meal with his buddies – a meal prepared by his personal chef.
  4. Jeter getting rained on in Tampa.
  5. Jeter’s mother talking baseball.
  6. Jeter’s Minka admitting she didn’t know a thing about the sport.
  7. Jeter’s teammates expressing their admiration.
  8. Jeter’s GM and owner expressing their admiration (as if the acrimonious contract negotiations never happened).

No, there weren’t any revelations or even a comment that surprised me. This was a documentary about Derek Jeter, after all. But it was must-see TV for Yankee fans and others who respect #2.

My only comment is that I was fortunate to enchange a few words with this legend in Spring Training several years ago. I will cherish that moment forever.

I LOVED IT! You are correct no revelations but it was so enjoyable none the less.
I was surprised that Minka was in this since he is so private about that part of his life.
    Guess it’s serious for sure.

I also notice his apartment was stylishly sparse and the table they were sitting at with friends (not while eating) was a poker table. Little things like that was interesting to see.

Just loved it all. My husband said, “no game tonight but we still are watching Yankees?”
You betcha! – you knew this when you married me buddy!

I was out and couldn’t watch but DVR’d it… been looking forward to it for a long time so I’m glad a diehard enjoyed it. Thanks for the highlight list!

    Jane,
Did not get to see the Doc yet, but I know Rays pitcher David Price truly is proud he gave up his 3,000 hit to Jeter. Isn’t it amazing the only other player to also hit a Home Run for their 3,000th hit played for both the Rays and Yankees. I think Wade Boggs even went for a Bosley hair treatment afterwards.
Seriously, the guy has an abode bigger than the Walt Disney World’s Cinderella Castle, a knock-out future wife and the admiration of a town of over 10 million+…….Kudos to “Jeetah”, he derseves every cheer.

He said a few words to the person sitting next to me at a World Series game, John. Does that count? LOL

I bet there will be a DVD of the documentary available soon, Barbara, in case you don’t see it on TV. It’s worth a few $$ as a collector’s item.

I wasn’t surprised to see Minka in it since she was at those games when he was chasing 3K, Peg. She knew HBO was recording it all and she’s an actress – I’m sure she was dying to be in it. She’s very pretty, obviously, but I wish she’d have been a little more articulate. “It sucked, for lack of a better word” is all she had to say when asked a question?

Since you like Jeter, Jeff, you should find the doc interesting. Lots of behind the scenes stuff in the minors while he was rehabbing. And not too melodramatic the way FOX would have done it. Very low key and Jeterian.

Very classy of Price to participate in the 3K stuff, Renegade. He seems to have a good attitude about it, which is refreshing.

I loved the HBO special. Jeter was a little more “real” than he usually is when he talks to the press after games.

I thought the explanation that Jeter gave at the end for why he allowed HBO access for the documentary was interesting and I thought revealed a little bit of personal information. I switched from YES which was replaying the 3000 game from July 9 to HBO at 9 o’clock. Every night is a baseball night during the season.

Yes, a little more real, Freya. It was just fun seeing him talk for longer than a quick soundbite. And I enjoyed seeing him hanging with his buddies.

So you had a doubleheader, Corinne! Pretty good for an off night.

Well, okay, it’s obvious…boyoboy, did I miss out.

I was too busy getting (what’s left of) my brains beat & butt kicked in our softball season playoff finale on yet ANOTHER 95-degree, 75% humidity night. Guess you-all had just a little more fun…

Hope that HBO shows it again, or archives it with their sports shows, ’cause Son #2 would love to see it, too. His big excitement this week was preparing to order a special “Jeter 3,000” T-shirt online — don’t know if it’s commonly available in Yankeeland yet…front of the navy tee shows JUST Jeter’s gloved hand and wrist, waving a Yankee helmet…back of the shirt has “3,000” in big block, pinstriped lettering…looks really good — let me know if you happen to notice it on somebody somewhere…!

Dave, not to worry about missing the documentary. HBO always shows plenty of repeats. Just go on their web site and it’ll probably list all the air dates. The tee sounds cool.

I like to think Jeter did this so that Costas wouldn’t get a hold of it. IMO. This way, he was able to keep it low key, the way he wanted.
