A Good News/Bad News Joke

July 7, 2011

Good news:

Jeter drew one hit closer to #3,000 in the very first inning and only needs two more.

Bad news:

He didn’t have another hit in the game and left runners on base in the process.

Good news:

Noesi was great in relief.

Bad news:

Colon was throwing meatballs.

Good news:

We get three more cracks at the Rays in this series.

Bad news:

We’re not in first place anymore.

Good news:

I had dinner at The Counter, so I didn’t dwell on tonight’s loss. (If you’ve never been to one of their restaurants, go.)

Bad news:

I’m so stuffed that my stomach can probably type this blog post all by itself. And so The Jeter Watch continues. Will he get his two hits tomorrow night? Or will he do it on Saturday when most of the country is blacked out by FOX? And when he does reach his milestone, will he make a speech like he did with the Gehrig thing? Oh, the drama.

OMG Jane….. I JUST REMEMBERED THE FOX BLACKOUT.. OMG. Jeter HAS to get these 2 hits tomorrow. If I miss it due to a FOX blackout.. SOMEONE WILL PAY.. Probably DirecTV, maybe MLB.. SOMEONE!

Crap. Now I’m the one freaking out. LOL.
PS- It wasn’t a pretty game.. but whatever.. New day tomorrow.

PS- After almost having a heart attack at 3am.. I just saw that the Saturday game will be on YES. Praise the baseball Gods. LOL

None of this seems that important anymoew after seeing video of that father falling from the stands in Texas. I am sure we all pray for the family and especially that little boy who saw his dad fall and later die.

I’ve been checking the schedule daily, hoping these weekend games would be on somewhere since Jeter is so close to 3,000, but I’m not seeing it on Fox or anywhere else – what am I missing?

Probably doesn’t matter for me – Saturday we will be on the road. On Sunday morning my daughter Emily is running a half-marathon in central Vermont and has to pick up her packet Saturday afternoon by 4:30. I think the timing is going to go against me even if they are on FOX. We’ll probably get to our hotel room around the time it ends. Maybe I’ll be able to listen on the radio for some of the trip but we’ll probably lose the station an hour into our drive.

If he is gonna do it on Saturday and I’m blacked out I am going to break something because I pride myself on having not missed any major milestone in the last four years (yah, I don’t get out much).

John, that incident in Texas was horrible. The guy didn’t do anything foolish, it’s poor stadium design. What a sad, sad thing.

When Jeter got up my husband commented how hard it must be to get a hit in that situation. I said that he’s been in so many playoffs and world series, where his at bat was crucial, that this is not as big a deal. He knows he’ll get two more hits before he retires.

I just got an email from my friend whose house we are going to tonight informing me that he wanted to put my mind at ease and there would be a Derek Jeter watch going on at their house. Yea!

To whoever took Bartolo Colon, could you please send him back ?

Sorry to freak you out about the FOX thing, Antonella. But your P.S. was reassuring – for you, not me. I don’t have DirecTV. I have Extra Innings on cable and they very often eliminate any day games that might conflict with whatever FOX is showing. I won’t know until Saturday. Ah, the suspense!

I saw the clip of the fall on my late news last night, John. Very tragic. It’s amazing, given how easy it looked for something dangerous like that to happen, that the ballpark in Texas doesn’t have safeguards in place. They will now, that’s for sure.

Sounds like you’ll be a busy family on Saturday, Audrey. (Good luck to Emily on the half-marathon.) Maybe Jeter will do us all a favor and get the hits tonight.

I’m with you, Jeff. But I think he’ll do it tonight. He’s been taking better swings and it’s not impossible that the milestone will happen in a few hours.

Jeter certainly knows how to hit in pressure situations, Melissa. You’re right about that. But your husband’s right too. This situation is different because it’s about Jeter, not the team, and that makes him uncomfortable. They have to stop the game for the special balls, the camera flashbulbs are going off, etc. I’m sure he wants it over with, even as he must be excited about reaching the milestone. Hooray that there will be Jeter Watching tonight at your friend’s house! And yes, I want the Other Bart back asap.

Good News: The Counter has come to Times Square, and if the Yankees are playing, they’re on the store’s TV. Bad News: It’s always jammed, so I’ve only gotten to eat there once, and the next closest one is in West Hartford — Red Sox Nation, boo freaking hiss.

I read that The Counter was now in Times Square, Uncle Mike, and I’ll probably hit it up when I come to NY next month. Clearly, they need to expand to more locations. Sooo good.

Owww. This has been a painful week. When a ballclub loses 4 outa 5, don’t care against who or where, they don’t deserve to stay in 1st place. And so, they aren’t. And now here they are, staring down the barrel of the HR-happy Rays, while the Hoseheads have an easy-meat probable 4-game sweep of The Zeros (that’s T.B.F.K.A.O. — The Ballclub Formerly Known As O-rioles). Crummy ending to the first half…or am I being a tad pessimistic?
Yes, we have the ritual Dance Of The 3,000 Bats to observe…amazing how the national media is all over this, like it’s Maris’ or Ripken’s or Joe D’s record…and oh yeah, btw, the Yankees lost the game (AGAIN). Let’s hope this thing is done, in the books, and put to bed tonight, so they (especially Jeet) can focus on the bigger picture ASAP…
Terrible story about the fan in Texas. Gives me an unpleasant memory from my ’02 Fantasy Camp in Fort Meyers…the hotel owners warned us to be c-a-r-e-f-u-l out on their balconies, ’cause the previous week, some big beefy HS football player leaned over backwards too hard on a 4′ high balcony fence and plummeted to his death, after numerous drinks. You can NEVER be too careful about stuff like that…

True about the team’s losses while everybody’s focused on Jeter, Dave. Not good. Girardi says everybody is still focused on winning games and I’m sure they are. But there has to be at least some distraction. Plus there’s the Clemens trial and various names being mentioned as possible witnesses. Must be hard to tune it all out at times. On the other hand, the extra stuff had nothing to do with Colon’s lackluster performance last night. Our pitchers need to step up! Sounds like you got good advice at Fantasy Camp and I’m glad you took it.

Erm… if anyone misses out on the YES feed tomorrow or Sunday, I heard that ESPN and MLB Network will jump in for Jeter’s at-bats if anyone is stuck with Tampa’s feed with the Extra Innings package… Per Michael Kay on his radio show yesterday.
