What a boring few hours.
The Yankees lost to a team with no offense – a team that scored all its runs on ground-outs.
A.J. had 97 pitches through five innings (or something like that), thanks to numerous walks. He didn’t implode, however, and held the M’s in check even when they threatened.
Our bullpen, on the other hand, coughed up a couple of runs of their own. I’m talking about Boone and Ayala. Why Girardi didn’t call for Robertson with bases loaded and nobody out – Robertson being the guy whose specialty is getting us out of those situations – is beyond me. I guess his binder told him it was only the sixth inning. Jeez. Way to not use your gut, Joe.
Our inability to score with men on base continues to baffle. Almost everybody looked pathetic at the plate, despite the lack of command by the Mariners’ highly touted rookie pitcher Pineda. But the most painful thing to watch for me was when Nunez went in to pinch-run for Jorge, stole second, then got picked off. The kid was asleep at the switch and it made me mad.
Maybe it was all my fault. The Yankees were ahead in the game when I got greedy. It had been a warm, sunny day here in Santa Barbara – our first real taste of summer – and I said to Michael, “Let’s get some hot fudge sundaes.”
He thought it was a great idea, got in the car and drove off to our local place, picked up the sundaes and brought them home. Just as we started to eat them, Boone/Ayala gave up the lead. So I blame myself…and these.

Jane……!! I can’t believe that sundae cost us our win!
I didn’t get to see much of game but the last two outs. I followed on my phone as best I could. I was out watching ‘The Hangover 2’, so I’ll take the blame for being an inattentive Yankee fan tonight… :( (funny movie! don’t recommend it if you’re squeamish or didn’t like the first one though.)
With all the hype about the kid Pineda, I’m glad we were able to score a few runs against him and not end up on the wrong side of a perfect game or something… We all know how they are against pitchers they’ve never seen (for the most part).
But now an even bigger challenge with King Felix tonight… Oh, boy! (Ack!-worthy?!) Other than a win (because, need I remind you, King Felix totally owned us last year), I’d like to see another miracle come out of Seattle after the game: Cashman doing his thing with his boys in town and come away with a King Ace up our sleeve… Hey, it almost happened last year with Cliff Lee! The only downside is that they’re playing so well lately and they’ve been so close minded about any sort of trade talks (as they should be to honest).
Hmmm…..

I went to be after the third inning. Just listened to a little bit after watching “The Kite Runner,” based on one of my favorite books. Compelling story, for sure. Glad I got a good night’s sleep but I’m still shaking my head over the lack of David Robertson use. He thrives in that situation – why in the world wasn’t he used? Great, now Boston is in first. The fans around here will be more obnoxious than usual.
I’m so sorry about the stupid sundae, YankeeCase. It wasn’t even good. By the time Michael brought it home, the hot fudge had hardened so much that it was hard to eat. Oh well. And you saw Hangover 2. I wrote about that on my Mainly Jane blog (and not in a good way). But each to his own. I was encouraged too that we were getting to Pineda, after all the hype about him and our problems with new pitchers, but even with his occasional wildness we couldn’t do much. Throughout the game I was thinking about the whole Cliff Lee thing and wondering how life would be if that trade had actually happened. We need to smoke King Felix tonight. Either that or trade for him. :)
Loved The Kite Runner, Audrey. Haven’t seen the movie though. The Robertson situation was just plain weird. At first when Joe didn’t bring him in I figured it was because he’d pitched a lot and was “unavailable.” But then when he came in later I was mystified. And yes, Boston is in first – temporarily!
