Ready?
- I still hate it when the Yankees lose in extra innings, even though it’s only April 5th.
- This team is capable of losing even when CC pitches a masterpiece.
- Andruw Jones might work out after all.
- Tex’s early-season offense is no fluke.
- Rafael Soriano cannot pitch in consecutive games, apparently.
- Boone Logan cannot pitch at all, apparently.
- Dave Robertson is the forgotten man in the pen, apparently.
- Luis Ayala is the guy Joe will go to when there’s no one else, apparently.
- Jeter got a hit, bringing his total to 2929, but it wasn’t the hit we needed.
- We are not Joe Nathan’s Daddy.
Yes, this was a tough one to swallow – literally. I was trying to eat dinner while the game went into extras and it wasn’t easy choking down the food while the Yankees coughed up the lead. With Garcia going tomorrow night and the bullpen used to the max tonight, who will pitch in the later innings besides Joba?
You really have to win games when your ace is on the mound, Yankees. Your bad. And enough with the homers. Let’s try getting some hits, which is how you create rallies.
For some reason this game really made my head explode.

Update: I’m adding the 11th thing I learned tonight: Soriano doesn’t stay and talk to the media after games he blows.
That was awful. Even worse, I was listening to it on the radio and John Sterling kept repeating the same things over and over. “You never know what can happen in baseball.” “The Yankees wasted a great effort by CC.” “That’s what happens when you walk people.” “You never know what can happen in baseball.” “The Yankees wasted a great effort by CC.” “That’s what happens when you walk people.” “You never know what can happen in baseball.” “The Yankees wasted a great effort by CC.” “That’s what happens when you walk people.”
I thought my head was going to explode. Then I became concerned for him. Is he developing Alzheimer’s?
Anyway, that was horrible.
Talk about your head exploding, Darren! If I’d listened to John repeating those lines over and over, my head would have gone clear across the country. I was on Twitter during the game and people were laughing at his home run call for Jones. Did he really say, “Andruw Jones has bones?” What does that even mean?
ok i know i’m just being sour but it was good to hear someone else annoyed by john sterling. i generally really like him and defend him when he is trashed in my household and anywhere else in boston. but i can’t stand how he repeats his himself when things are going bad. there was one playoff series that i wanted the throw the radio at the wall. it was bad and he was making it way worse. not a good way for you to eat dinner and for me to go to sleep.
I live in Arkansas and have DirecTV, but I cannot afford the MLB package. However, we are getting it for free through April 10. therefore, I was able to watch the last two games against the Twins. To me, who rarely gets a chance to hear John Sterling or any other announcer, it was heaven. Sure, I miss Mel Allen, Red Barber, and Phil Rizzutto, but it is wonderful to hear and watch any broadcaster who isn’t always yelling “Go Hogs!”
Well, that sucked.
I mentioned last year that I do feel concerned about Sterling. He seems off some times. I like him, though at times he is pretty funny without meaning to be.
And I thought Kaye and Flash were going to come to blows last night over kaye’s use of
His iPad. They really don’t seem to like each other.
it was interesting to see the total wiffs by the two twins who’d never faced mariano.
Let’s hope today is a better day.
Jane, he really did say “Andrew Jones has bones.” I have no idea what it means, but it made me laugh at the time. Also in case you missed it when Russel Martin his his 3-run homer the other day, “Russel has muscle!”
Looking forward to putting this one behind us. Let’s hope Garcia has at least one good game left in him.
Oh, I almost forgot. When I was in Tampa last week I saw Jorge working out in his catcher gear with Tony Pena. Guess he is staying in shape to be our emergency 3rd catcher.
Last night I went to bed grateful that I wasn’t you, Jane, having to write about that game. Awful, just awful. Like Yankeefansince1941 I’ve been enjoying the MLB free preview so I missed John Sterling and his repetitious response to the Yankees’ rapid decline, but I’m afraid my husband heard my own version of it “This is awful, this is just awful.” I can’t stop saying it.
Jeter didn’t do much to help me win the book contest last night but at least my crush is still crushing the ball. Love ya Tex!
I’m disappointed that Jane’s Top 10 did not include a shout out to the flying onion rings of the top of the 7th….
Hi, Jane. Soriano not staying to talk to reporters could be a sign of things to come with him. A bad sign. I hope the Yankees can nip this thing in the bud with him and prevent further problems.
Didn’t think it would happen that fast… but I felt like this was bound to happen after Matt Yalof on MLBN said the Twins might as well forfeit the next three games. Whoops.
It’s all eerily apparent.

I think we all felt sour after last night, Barbara, whether we listened to Sterling or not. The game itself was tough, no matter who was broadcasting, but I’m sure having the same things repeated over and over was especially hard to take. All I know about John is that he’s a fan too, and I think that carries over into his broadcasting. He wants them to win as much as we do.
Yankeefansince 1941, I can appreciate what it must be like to get the games for free – pure heaven. I do get the extra innings package on cable, so I see most of the games. But the broadcasts are often the opposing team’s feeds and that’s torture enough. So I’m always thrilled to get the games on YES.
If all had gone well, Melissa, Mo should never even have warmed up for that game. It made no sense to me that Joe brought Soriano in with the score 4-0 in the eighth. He had Robertson warming, so why not use him and save Soriano/Mo this early in the season? Made me nuts.
I heard the “Russell has muscle” from the previous game, Darren. Maybe the Jones call was meant to riff off that? Who knows. His calls get weirder and weirder. Thanks for the pic of Jorge in catching gear. I doubt we’ll see him catch but as an emergency 3rd catcher until Cervelli gets back? Possibly.
Thanks for sympathizing, Audrey. I still had heartburn when I went to bed last night! Too bad we were out of Pepcid. Jeter is creeping along in the hit parade. I don’t think he’ll get to the contest number this weekend, but I hope I’m wrong.
HAHAHA, I forgot the flying onion rings, Ruth! So right. On Twitter we were all speculating that Andruw Jones secretly went back for those rings, picked them off the ground and ate them.
Hi, Bern. I was bothered by the Soriano-not-talking-to-the-press thing too. I hope he has a good explanation, because once the beat writers don’t like a guy it never goes away.
It’s such a mistake for people to say “the Yankees own the Twins” and “The Twins will never beat the Yankees,” Jeff. Yalof shouldn’t have said what he did. It’s not only a jinx but it’s not true. The Twins are a good team and they’ll win their share of games. Of course, I’d prefer it if Pavano didn’t get the win tonight.
Very fortune cookie, Paul.
“Soriano has…no more ammo?”
That’s the best I could do, which ain’t too good, which he obviously wasn’t. It IS aggravating when you drift off to sleep knowing the Yanks had a comfy lead in the late innings, and then…Say WHA? And it does not sound like Sterling John made it any easier to endure.
Happy for YankFanSince’41…glad you can get some “coverage” out there in Ozark-Land, with the Soo-Eee Pigs…since ’41 was a Championship Season, I’ll take his new participation as a very GOOD omen…and Our Boyz beat the Dodgers that year, too! Just one bad game last nite, that’s all (I hope).
Heyy, it could be worse — what ARE they doing in Beantown today, now that the GOAT is 0-4?!? (Jane, whaddya like better — GOAT for ‘Greatest Of All Time’ or G-TOAT, for “Greatest Team Of All Time”?). And they lost to CLEVELAND?!? That puts ’em 4 games behind…the O’s!! Oh yeah, right…it’s early…
Even the Mighty Phillies lost. I guess they could consider postpone printing those Bahston-Philly World Series tickets for at least a few days, eh?
It’s funny that we’re all scoreboard watching at this early stage of the season, Dave. Phillies, Red Sox, Rays. We have enough to contend with on our own team. I’m starting to think the cold weather played a part in last night’s defeat. Some of the players said that as the game went on and the temperatures dropped, it was really hard to hold a bat, never mind a ball.
My point from yesterday about rallies and getting runs on something other than the long ball (and in an inning later than the 2nd or 3rd) was proven last night. Very frustrating, and what a waste to a beauty by CC.
I thought of you, ladyjane, when I was writing about the lack of hits/rallies. So true!
Hi,
I know it’s early in the season and we shouldn’t panic after a loss like last night but there is a thread from last year running through that game. Why the refusal to let STAR pitchers go 8 or 9 innings? I can see taking a Nova or some other less seasoned pitcher out after 6 or 7 innings, especially considering the solid bull pen, but not an ace like CC. Why is Gerardi a slave to the bull pen regimen? And why in the world wasn’t Mariano brought in when the struggles happened in the 8th? It’s early in the season – surely he can go one and a fraction innings. I thought last year that Gerardi took many pitchers out too soon and went too strictly with the use of one man for the 7th, one man for the 8th and one man for the 9th. He never lets a solid reliever go more than the one inning. I think he should. Why not stay with the hot hand for at least one more batter?
PS It’s nice to see that Boston and Tampa Bay are having a tougher time than the Yankees.
Girardi is always going to go by that “binder” he reads in the dugout, Harold. I, too, wish he would rely more on his gut instincts rather than stats and matchups, but he is who he is. He figured CC was over 100 pitches, it was early in the season, so why not pull him. My beef was the use of Soriano in that game.
Hi Jane and fellow Yankee fans,
I understood John’s home run call for Andruw Jones to be Jones made his bones. I looked it up and this site has the popular meaning. http://www.doubletongued.org/index.php/dictionary/make_ones_bones/
Lynne
i have been wondering how you are doing without the superstitions. i have been trying to stay away from them but then i find myself thinking maybe they lost because i wore the wrong shirt or underwear or something. and maybe the red sox are losing because i’m working on not hating them. it is hard for me to give up the idea that i can control these games in some way. all the red sox fans looked more miserable than me at the gym today. one guy i talk to regularly walked up to me and said don’t say anything and for once we didn’t talk baseball, actually we didn’t talk.
Thanks for the link and the explanation, Lynne. Somebody on Twitter last night actually mentioned the gangster connection – or maybe it was a Mafia connection. Still, it’s an awfully weird thing for John Sterling to say!
I’ve been doing really well with my superstitions, Barbara. I haven’t resorted to them at all, win or lose. All I did was yell at the TV a lot. Does that count? LOL
