They used to be called bike riders. They used to be people who rode along on their side of the street and didn’t bother anybody. They used to wear normal clothes instead of actual Lance Armstrong-y outfits.
But now they’re the most annoying people on the planet and here’s why: They think they own the planet. Well, okay. Not the planet, but almost. The streets of Santa Barbara have loads of bike paths and they’re clearly marked, and yet whenever I’m out driving I inevitably come upon a half-dozen cyclists who are not in the bike paths. Instead, they’re hogging the road. If I stay behind them, I’m stuck moving at a snail’s pace, which causes a backup of cars behind me. If I speed up and try to go around them, they not only give me dirty looks but force me to put myself into oncoming traffic.
Today I was driving down to the beach for my afternoon walk and came upon seven or eight cyclists. Despite the fact that there was a bike lane, they were fanned out across the entire road. I was really mad, so guess what I did: I honked my horn at them.
They were not pleased and did this.
Why can’t we all just get along? Sigh.
