According to ESPN, the offer’s been made. Will the big man take it and decide not to opt out after all? It would be nice – refreshing even – but my guess is he’ll opt out simply because he can. The clause was put in his contract to allow for the possibility that he could not only make more money but bail on New York if he didn’t like it.
It seems clear that he does like New York and his wife has expressed how much she and the kids enjoy life in New Jersey, but it’s rare when professional athletes don’t go for the bucks when they have the opportunity.
That said, I would practically guarantee that CC will remain a Yankee. His agents will do some haggling but in the end everybody will come up with a deal they can live with.
Still, I’d feel more comfortable if this situation gets wrapped up sooner rather than later so Cashman can start addressing the team’s other needs. I don’t want a repeat of last year when all his eggs were tied up in Cliff Lee.
(If something happens while I’m asleep here on the west coast, feel free to yell very loudly and wake me up with the news.)
