Sloppy Joes

July 14th, 2013 by Jane Heller

I had guests and didn’t see the game today, only the highlights – or should say low lights? Sounds like it was one of those days when nothing goes right. The Nunez error I get; I did call him Eduardo Scissorhands after all. But Overbay? He’s been terrific. As for CC, I guess it wasn’t his day either.

Not a great way to go into the A-S break, but maybe the Yanks will be fresher after the time off? They couldn’t be much worse. In the past they’ve been a better second-half team, so I hope that holds true this year. The problem is that the players are who they are – i.e. the non-stars are not going to suddenly morph into superstars. But maybe Cashman has something up his sleeve that doesn’t involve somebody who’s been DFA-ed.

After a good nights sleep and getting over that loss, here are my thoughts:

I’m sure I’m not the only one in saying that the first half has been a relatively decent success for the team due to the circumstances. I say relatively because there were several points where they should’ve beaten up the weaker opponents more to beef up their record. Injuries destroyed the lineup to the point that they can no longer sit idly waiting for the reenforcements from the DL and should make moves now. I hope moves arent made just for the sake of making some but that those moves are made with the team’s immediate and hopefully future needs in mind. For example, a player who I believe we should target is Kendrys Morales. He can DH and play first base to cover our weaknesses there (Hafner has been awful and Overbay is now overexposed). He’s batting .280/.337/.463 which would be a big upgrade over what the majority of the team. He should not cost much to acquire either as he is a free agent after this season. I also believe we should target a third baseman. Even if A-Rod does return, he’s only getting older and will be given mostly DH spots. As for a completely unrealistic but nice to dream player to aquire, it would be great to get Giancarlo Stanton even if he would require an expensive package.

I agree about the need for a third baseman for sure, Leo. And I’m with you on the idea of not just getting some stopgap person but a player who can help over the longer term. Mostly though I think the injuries have made this a very challenging season and it would be wise to look ahead to the future. We need younger players – they’re the future of the game and we don’t have any budding stars in the system that I know about.

Thank you for posting pictures of Sloppy Joes, to show those doofuses (doofii?) who call something else a Sloppy Joe that they do NOT contain cole slaw.

Lol. Cole slaw? Never heard that one, Uncle Mike.
