Heeere They Come

It’s kind of amazing, isn’t it? Baseball season comes to a screeching halt in the fall and the Yankees-less winter feels like it’ll never end, and then suddenly it’s spring training in Tampa. Pitchers and catchers report on Tuesday and there will be others trickling in too.

I wish I could feel more hopeful about the 2013 Yankees. We have some truly great players that other teams can only dream about. We also have promising farmhands who could make a difference this year. And we have our usual cast of new guys who are past their prime but hoping a change of scenery will give their careers a boost. Not a bad collection by any means.

Still, I’m wondering where the power will come from. I’m wondering who’ll be our righty outfielder. I’m wondering who’ll be our catcher. I’m wondering what our rotation will look like. I’m wondering if Mo will have the stamina to close for the entire season (I don’t worry about his ability as a closer; I never worry about that). I’m wondering if all the jokes about how old the team is will prove to be true. (See Tyler Kepner’s reference to the early-bird special in today’s NYT.) I’m wondering who’ll be the backup infielder since Cashman has said Nunez will stick to shortstop. I’m wondering if Girardi will be managing for the last time in pinstripes. I’m wondering when the next steroids revelation will appear and whether there will be any suspensions.

All that being said, hope springs eternal and maybe the Yankees will surprise me. I always remind myself that no team is perfect and that the teams everybody anoints to win it all hardly ever do. So who knows.

The good news is we’ll have baseball again. I’m busy with lots of projects these days, so I may not post on this blog as often as I’ve done in the past. We’ll see. In the meantime, I’m anticipating the first look at our guys in their nice clean uniforms and will probably let out a girly squeal when that happens.

I’m so excited! At last, baseball is back. I share your concerns about the team Jane. There are a lot of unknowns so far. It will be an interesting season. I already have a ticket to see the Yankees when they play the Rockies in Coor’s Field in May.

I just got the exhibition game tickets. I am taking a day off work and hubby and I are hitting DC for some fun, hopefully sun, and our boys. I don’t imagine all will be there, it is just an exhibition. But it’s baseball, it’s Yankees and it’s here in my area. Can’t complain.

I’m worried this season…The AL East is always the toughest in the entire league, but especially this year. I see The Orioles and The Blue Jays as real contenders this year – hopefully that means The Red Sox will be in last place. Happy that training has begun. With the snow storm that hit us this weekend I need something to look forward to. GO YANKEES !!!

So you’re going to Colorado, Freya? That’s pretty cool.

You too, Peg, about the exhibition tickets. I was planning to get tix to see the Yanks when they play the Dodgers in LA but it turns out I’ll probably be back east at the end of July. Rats.

I agree about the Jays and O’s, Diane. The O’s have been tough enough, but now the Jays have joined the party. Should be a real dogfight in our division.

Hi Jane & Fellow Baseball Fans…

I have been busy, busy, busy and not much time to write. I hope to get back into the swing of things soon.
I just wanted to tell you (Jane) that I’ll be coming to LA when the Yankees play the Dodgers (probably going to two games). Hopefully, we can meet up this time around. Also will head to San Diego to see them play the Padres. Guess who will be with me? None other than the Lucky Met Fan cousin… :o)….so …hopefully, that will guarantee me at least 2 wins out of the 3 (hoping for all 3 tho’).

I’m so excited for the season to start …GOOOOOOOO YANKEES !!!

    Go Yankees 2013 !!!

    Jane …

Oh drats…I just read you will be on the East coast when I head to the West coast. Well…maybe we can meet up at Yankee Stadium for a game. I would love if we could get a day when as many she-he fans could also attend. That would be a blast. If we had enough people we could do one of the group party areas that the Yankees offer (the Malibu Rooftop one isn’t that expensive). Just a thought…

Hope to see you at some point this season ….

    Go Yankees 2013!!!

  7. Freya says:

It would be great to have a group meet meet up.

  8. Jane Heller says:

Yes, Peggy, I was disappointed to see that the Yankees will be in LA when I’m back east. Bad timing! As for a meet up at the Stadium, I’m such a last minute planner but it would be fun. I won’t know my dates for awhile but will let you know.

    Ditto, Freya!

(To the tune of “(Theme From) The Monkees.” You’re prob’ly too young to remember, but…):

    “Here they COME…
    Walkin’ Tampa’s streets…
They get the funniest looks from…
    Everyone they meet…

    Hey, hey, we’re the Yankees!
They say we hanky panky around!(?)!
    But we’re too busy swingin’
    To put anybody down…

We’re just tryin’ to compete some…
    And blow the A.L. away…
    ‘Cause we’re the old generation…
We still got somethin’ to say…!”

    …or so we hope…

    Bob-
LOVE IT! I thought of that song right away when I read the title of this post. I really like your Yankees Spring Training version! (for the record I am early to mid 30’s and totally know this song!) Thanks for the smile.
