Breathing Room

September 24th, 2012 by Jane Heller

Thanks to the O’s dropping the nightcap of their double header and the Yankees’ win over the Twins, we have a tiny bit more daylight between the teams. Why did we win? It was a simple equation:

Andy + 4 homers.

Our relievers (not Joba) ruined the shutout, but I won’t be greedy. If Girardi wants to use Cory Wade and Justin Thomas to save some arms, fine with me. But Robertson needs to get good and sharp for October. And it would be really nice if the heart of the lineup (A-Rod, Cano) hit bombs instead of just the back-end guys.

Most of all, how lucky are we to have Andy back? I still can’t believe he’s been able to slide right into the rotation with hardly a blip. May it continue.

Andy is a treat. Raul’s second wind is delightful. I liked runs early for less stress. Bizarre that this little lead is breathing room!

I like that you call it Raul’s second wind, Barbara, because that’s exactly what it feels like. He was great early, mediocre in the middle and now great again at the end. Early runs mean less knitting, right?

Wheww. What a race. What a pace!!
Of course, there’s an embarrassment of riches in this area when it comes to pennant fever this year. It’s just that, like all y’all, I’m none too thrilled that the O’s are smack dab in the middle of it.
On Sunday, I saw some ESPN graphic that noted how the Yanks and O’s have been separated by no more that ONE GAME in the standings for the past 20 days. First time in SIXTY-plus years — wow. That became an even three weeks on Monday, and now — ah, just that little sliver of extra daylight. But it’s an important sliver. The Orioles are now two games back in the loss column, and have played one additional game. One they can’t get back. That is HUUUGE.
Was home Monday, and caught glimpses of both O’s-Jays games in between the Nats-Brewers contest. How delightful that (A) my old Canadian boyz helped out the Yanks, and (B) both of my fave teams now have a Magic Number of 5. Of course, with only 9 games to go, that’s still a sizeable number. EVERY game matters. But all I’ve asked, for weeks now, is that every day can that number please go down? Hasn’t happened much in this race — but oh how much nicer that made Monday. Keep on rollin’…
