Naturally.
Why should this season be a picnic? Didn’t we want our nerves to be shot, our stomachs to be in a knot, our brains exploding?
No. We did not. But here we are. The Yankees had a poor showing yet again in today’s matinee at the Trop and the Orioles, by contrast, beat the Blue Jays handily.
CC was just okay. Perfectly adequate but not the dominant stopper we expect an ace to be. (I miss Andy. He used to be the guy who shut the other team down after a bad patch.)
Ichiro and Dickerson nearly killed each other with that collision, but it appears neither was hurt. Perhaps Dickerson needs to learn “I got it” in Japanese or Ichiro needs to learn to get out of the way of a center fielder who’s bigger than he is.
Cano was the goat of twitter for not hustling out of the box and getting thrown out at first as well as for not stretching for the ball that ultimately went past him for a big Tampa hit. Not sure what’s up with him at this point.
A-Rod’s return was unspectacular, but he did get a hit – and hits have been in short supply for this team.
The last inning was tough to watch: Nunez on third with the tying run and stranded there. Ugh.
Maybe the Yankees can take the rest of the Labor Day holiday and think about how it’ll feel playing golf in October. Or maybe, as one mischief maker suggested on twitter, someone should start checking the clubhouse for fried chicken and beer.

Just horrible, I really hope there’s no chicken and beer in the clubhouse.
I hope they get a break tomorrow. This wasn’t funny to watch. I know this is the time of the year when they start to get tired, but if they not react , they will have plenty of time to rest in the postseason.
Best wishes to all
James
They do look tired, James, and it’s understandable that they’d run out of gas. It’s all about being hot at the right time, and this team is not hot. At all.
*sigh*
I’m watching Canadian football to try and calm my nerves. Hopefully we win tomorrow.
I’m not sure what to pin this one on. We’re just not playing well as a team. I wish I could figure out how to snap us out of our malaise. Maybe we should play some of the September call-ups… if nothing else, giving some of our veterans a day off might rejuvenate them a bit. I’m out of ideas.
Dickerson is a Sept call up, Sean. And I guess they’re bringing back McGehee, not sure why. And of course Nunez is there. They’ll all see action.
Jane,
What a disappointment! Only your twitter comments made today’s game fun! I think the team needs a proverbial “slap-up the side of the head”! We have been on top too long this season to lose it now. The Orioles are not going to go away! I think it is time for the She-Fan doll to make an appearance!
Omg, Kathleen. I completely forgot about the She-Fan doll. I totally need to find that video somewhere!…..Just went on YouTube and found the doll. Here she is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFf2lGMD4P0&feature=share&list=UU3zKLR4T9aP2QO4Ul6cquMw
My wife hid my rifle and all my ammunition after the game. She said I looked despondent. then she reminded me that we did not have a single first string outfielder in the game, nor did we have our regular first baseman. So we were playing with subs.I lie to think that we would have already clinched if we had had Granderson, Gardner, Teixeira, Pettitte and Mariano healthy all season. Actually Girardi is doing a decent job with all the retreads he is using.Looking ahead to next year, we will have (I hope) Rivera, Pineida, Feliciano, Gardner, Pettitte, and Aardsma healthy and available for duty. We might even find a gem somewhere in the minors. I’m just sayin’.
That was a bad series. I know we did take one but that’s clearly not enough. We’re still in 1st and have been for over half a season but they guys seem very down — not sad; energy-wise. And where is the home run derby that we were enjoying for most of the season.
Tampa runs the bases like geniuses – its almost impossible to keep them from scoring once there’s a man on. Martin did throw out one runner which was beautiful but it didn’t get us a “W”. GO YANKEES???
You’re right about next year, yankeefansince1941, especially if Pineda isn’t a bust. But I’m not willing to give up on this year yet. Tex and Granderson will be back and even Pettitte could show his face soon.
I loved when Martin threw out the runner, Diane, and thought the out might galvanize the team. Sigh. The home run derby seems to be taking a break. It was fun while it lasted.
Jane,
Speaking of next year, the Dodgers go to Yankee Stadium for two in July and Yankees come to Dodger Stadium for two in June. I am going to New York! In the meantime Dodgers not doing well against their owen division might be looking at the wild card instead. They need to do well this weekend in San Francisco.

Very exciting news that the Yankees are coming to LA next June, Emma. Thanks for the heads up and I hope to see you there. Also cool that you’re going to the series in the Bronx. Good luck to your boys.
Cano is probably out of the lineup tonight with a sore hip? I’m now officially in “miserable handwringer” mode, and, I almost dread watching the game at Tampa this evening (5pm here). The Yanks are an aging, beat up team that just doesn’t seem to bring the same killer instinct to the diamond that the hungry Rays and near starved Orioles are doing at this critical stage of the season. Let’s hope Garcia is on an even keel tonight, and that he gets run support. One game at a time, guys.
I don’t dread watching the game, NYL, but I’ll have to miss the last few innings due to dinner plans. Will be checking my iPhone for updates and hoping my appetite won’t be ruined.
