Yanks Play Sparkling Baseball

August 28th, 2012 by Jane Heller

My favorite moment of tonight’s win over the Blue Jays was the double play started by a leaping Cano. Just beautiful.

Hughes pitched very well. I worried as I watched him in the first inning; he was nibbling and his pitch count wasn’t efficient. But he settled down and got on a roll. I don’t think I’ll ever love his style; he frustrates me when he doesn’t put hitters away with two strikes. Still, he must be applauded for his performance tonight.

The offense did just enough to scratch out a couple of runs. (Where would we be without Swisher?) When I saw the lineup before the game, I said, “The new guy is batting cleanup? And Martin is fifth?” It made no sense, but with the others struggling and Tex and A-Rod out, I guess there weren’t a lot of choices.

Anyhow, good job by Robertson and Soriano. And good job by the Yankees to hold onto their division lead.

We’ll need to win games like this in the playoffs. Think of it as a dress rehearsal. Good job, boys!

And if Hughes can hold teams in check like this the rest of the year and into October, I’ll be very happy.

After the painful night before this was sweet. Now we need a Janer today since the d rob and sori are likely rested and we fans need to go without tension. So my dad and Audrey got the MLB package on the day of misery game so I am glad they got to watch live or on archive last nights gem. As someone else who doesnt live in ny, MLB.tv is a treat!

I’m going to the game today and I am wearing my lucky #7 Mantle shirt. GO YANKEES!

Happy for the win. Mariano apparently spoke to Soriano to make him ready to get the save and he did it perfectly. Is it my imagination does the new guy look like Martin’s twin brother? I don’t know. Anyway, the weather her in NY is gorgeous and C.C. will be going out there at 1 pm — sounds like all good news. Then they get what would actually be considered a day and a half of rest before the next series on Friday. This is all good news. And for football fans, the afternoon game today means we can watch the Giants tonight and the day off tomorrow means we can watch the Jets. I’m guessing there was some kind of plan here…but for now, since its still pre-season in the NFL…GO YANKEES!!!

    Me too, Sean.

A Janer would be perfect, Barbara. I much prefer those to the tension-packed games as you know!

Excellent, Freya. Have fun and bring us luck with #7.

Mariano has been mentoring Soriano since last year, Diane, and I love it. If Mo can’t pitch, at least he can spread his wisdom.

Hooray. Good to get one, and a close one at that…

Owing to my near-total ignorance of Recent Yankee Events (except for the final scores) — could y’all please enlighten me as to the name/source/use of Norman Newboy, the Cleanup Man? Heard his name once on ESPN, saw his face for a second…no bells went off. Thanx for the update, in advance…

And GOOD LUCK to Freya! Lovin’ that you’re wearin’ The Mick!! Reminds me of when I went to that fantasy camp back in ’91…if there were 150 campers, I’ll bet you that 100 of us chose Uniform #7 to have on our (take-home) Yankee jersey, including yours truly. Made for some confusion during our squad games, but who cared…after all, if you could have ANY Yankee uni number on yours, what’d it be…?!!
