Nix This, Mariners

July 25th, 2012 by Jane Heller

Am I ever happy the Yankees got out of Dodge Seattle alive. The Mariners pitchers were treating our boys like it was target practice with all the brush-backs and plunkings. Watching Jeter get nailed in the upper thigh/lower butt was the last straw for me. Grrrr.

Today’s game was a tough one to sit through for lots of reasons. Nova kept walking people and our hitters kept leaving men on base and everybody looked sort of listless – until the eighth inning. Then the fun began.

With the bases loaded, who played the hero? None other than Jayson Nix, the journeyman. (“Nixy,” as Girardi calls him, actually smiled during the post-game interview – a rarity.) It was thrilling to see the bases clear after innings of nothingness, and Martin’s contribution to bring Nix home provided nice insurance.

Excellent work by the relievers, especially Phelps, who is really proving his worth to this team.

I still think Cashman should get a third baseman because Chavez needs to be wrapped in this.

But in the meantime, the rest of the guys need to start mashing the ball, pure and simple. The off-day will give them a chance to get over their jet lag and with any luck they’ll be up for the games against the Red Sox and the O’s. I mean really up for them.

A win, no additional injuries, and an off day for our boys to recharge. Can’t complain.

Now we absolutely must do well against our divisional rivals. Don’t want to let them back in the race.

Can we try scoring some runs in the first 7 innings, please?

I don’t know what was more painful watching us be horrible with runners in scoring position or the grant I was editing at work whilst I was watching and then joe sends up nix and I for one didn’t think he’d do anything. Well I finished editing, got in the car and had a happy drive home. Part of me now thinks I need to get in the car for the offense to start.

That was a boring and frustrating game to listen to – until the 8th inning! I was in the middle of making dinner and the kitchen was filled with my girls and their friend (A Sox fan at that!) but had turned off the radio so I could visit with them (plus it was pretty noisy). I went to my computer to check the score and saw we had the bases loaded and Nix at bat. I ran back to the radio, put my ear to the speaker and as there just in time to hear John Sterling going ballistic over Jayson Nix’s three run double. Fun stuff!! Now it’s time to renew and refresh and show the Sox a good time at our place. Good for the Yankees and their fans anyway.

Seven runs on Friday would be lovely, Sean. Ten, even better. But I think there’s rain in the forecast?

Yup, Barbara, you now have to start driving for the Yankees to win in comeback fashion. LOL

Sterling was driving me nuts while I was listening to the game before switching to TV, Audrey. He kept doing his home run call for those caught balls and giving me heart attacks.

Missed the game again because we had another free concert – Big Shot – the Billy Joel Tribute band that is almost as famous as Billy himself — in fact, almost half the band now used to be in Bill Joels’ band. Fabulous show. Anyway, glad to hear Nix finally smiled. I saw the replace of his base clearing double and he didn’t smile at that time. Odd, but he’s good so I have no problem with Nixy — I love how Girardi puts an “EE” at the end of almost every players name. Is it because of YankEE or is he just playing? Anyway, now on to a home stand — obviously we have to beat Boston…GO YANKEES!!!

  6. Jane Heller says:

Joe loves his “ee” nicknames, Diane. I guess it makes them seem more familiar and like a little family. Who knows!

  7. Melissa says:

I didn’t get to see the post game, so I missed Nix smiling! Diane I also noticed he didn’t smile after the double.

  8. Jane Heller says:

He smiled during the post-game interview with Meredith WhatsHerName.

  9. Diane Anziano says:

I like Meredith Merokovitz (?) sooo much better than the woman they had last year. I can’t remember her name but she was so annoying. Jeter would always torture her when she had to interview him but he’s very nice to Meredith.

Winning makes all those bruised batters just a little bit less sore.

Good to get OUT of the Northwest. Sayonara. Take a nice long ride home & regroup.
It looks to be a good time to be taking on these Old Foes, but you just never know. Son #1 took a date to Camden Yards last nite to see his O’s get smoked by the Rays, and he’s now given up on them. But that’s when they seem to be at their most dangerous. And of course, first things first from Beantown, where rumors of their demise may still be premature (hope not)…

I’ve got 1 ticket available for Saturday game vs Sox. Anyone need one???

    1 ticket for Saturday available

Hi Jane & Fellow Baseball Fans…

My favorite part of Nixy’s interview was when he said …”thanks Michelle” at the end of it ..haha. I guess he doesn’t get interviewed that often to remember her name is Meredith. I also guess it takes some time for the players to get use to the new “gal” as Kim Jones had been there quite awhile. I was very happy for Nix…I love when the bench players get that big hit …good for them. I was just happy they won the series and came home on a winning note. Now it’s time to play the Red Sox and I hope we can beat them good. It always makes me feel just that much better when we beat the RS. I’ll be at the game on Sunday night (the dreaded ESPN late game). Fortunately, I’m on vacation that following week so I don’t care how late it ends this time.

Here’s wishing a speedy recovery to Alex, hoping to see Joba soon for bullpen relief and in another month …ANDY !! Even with all the losses we still have a nice lead on the rest of the A.L. East as they didn’t do much to help themselves as we lost.

Have a relaxing night everyone ….get ready for RS weekend…

    Go Yankees 2012 !!!

  14. Jane Heller says:

I agree that the Red Sox are always dangerous, Dave. I never believe that demise stuff.

    No takers so far, John.

Lucky you going on Sunday night, Peggy. Here’s hoping the storms are out of the area by then. I’m here in the boonies gearing up and hoping the predicted tornadoes tonight don’t materialize.
