Dewayne Wise. What an incredible performance in tonight’s victory against the Indians – a victory that almost wasn’t a victory thanks to Cory Wade but more on that in a sec.
First Wise’s Jeter impersonation. What better way for him to celebrate the Captain’s birthday than to throw himself into the seats to make a dazzling catch? Very Jeterian – except that Wise didn’t make the catch. Not even close.
If you missed it, check out the video and commentary on Deadspin. What is the matter with the ump that he didn’t ask to see the ball? Did he have a hot dinner date after the game? Seriously terrible.
But I don’t want the Wise non-catch to overshadow what was another fine outing for Hughes. He was great. And I figured, as I’m sure he did when he left the game, that he’d not only get the win but a shutout. Wrong. I understand that Girardi probably thought a 7-0 lead was the perfect time to bring in the slumping Wade, but Cory seems ready for the glue factory. Soriano never should have had to come in to close this one. At least he only faced one batter.
So. Another night. Another win. We got excellent starting pitching and good hitting (including actual non-homers). I’m happy.

I *thought* it would be another easy win but that 9th inning turned hairy…
Wise did exactly what he’s supposed to do. If the umpire is going to blow a call in your favor, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. A very bad day for that particular ump, who had *two* obvious blown calls.
Well, we got a win for the Captain on his birthday. I’ll take it, regardless of the sideshow.
Apparently my first comment didn’t make it through, so I’ll try again.
I thought that as going to be another easy win, and then the ninth inning happened. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Wade? Maybe we sould send him down to the minors for a couple weeks, or put him on the DL with a dead arm.
At least we did GET the win. Nice b’day present for the Captain.
As for Wise… he did exactly what he was supposed to. If the ump is blowing a call in your favor, you Sierra Tango Foxtrot Uniform and hasten back to the dugout. Very intelligent.
And a horrible day for that ump. He blew TWO obvious calls. Hopefully it was just a glitch and he gets bck in the groove tomorrow. Umpires do a thankless job. The 99% of the time they get it right, no one notices. The 1% of the time they blow it, everyone starts screaming at them for being either incompetent or corrupt.
Let’s keep the wins coming…
Dawggone it, NOW my first comment shows. Oh well. I meant everything I said in both.
I missed most of the game but checked out the score in the seventh and was happy to see the Yanks up 4-0. We then had dinner (at almost 9 p.m. – a little late for my family) and afterward I settled in to watch the rest of the game. After the Yankees tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth I turned off the television. This one was in the bag. Whoa! When I checked the score later I was shocked but I guessed immediately who had been pitching. Wade is really starting to scare me. He needs a rest and I don’t think we can wait till the All-Star break.
Regardless of the fact that the blown call was in our favor, it was still really awful and the umpires need to be held accountable. They get away with anything and the fact that Hannahan was tossed because he was arguing the awful decision makes it even worse. I know I’d be raging if the call was against us and even worse, imagine if it was in a playoff game. So the umpire needs to be fined, suspended without pay, anything. The umpires are on a power trip because they believe they are infallible and it needs to stop. Otherwise, Hughes did great and the offense started coming back to life with RISP today so that was nice to see especially with the bases loaded which had been a major obstacle.
I think you’re both right about the umpiring, Sean and Leo. They do a thankless job and get it right a lot of the time. On the other hand, the quality of the umpiring has gone downhill in the last couple of years and it’s hard not to notice. Last night was one example of egregious ump-ing. There’s no debate about whether Wise was right to play along. It’s the umpire’s complete bungling of the situation that needs addressing.
I agree about Wade, Audrey. He’s starting to remind me of Scott Proctor and that’s not a good thing. I see a DFA coming.
We went to the movies to see Men In Black III last night so we missed the game. Glad for a win and for Hughes doing such a good job but we did make it home to see the scary 9th. So glad Soriano is such a rock these days. Really glad there’s no “instant replay” rule in MLB yet…we probably would have won anyway but you never know. Afternoon game today. GO YANKEES!!!
Ah, just in time for the scary 9th, Diane. We really were coasting until then. Too bad Hughes couldn’t have gotten his second complete game. Agree about instant replay!
Nice birthday win for Jeet. Wade is an issue, no doubt…but every team’s got one (or maybe a lot more)…
A brief treatise on the umps. Yes, that was an awful call; didn’t see the other one, but no need. From my perspective, as a 20-year ump of slo-pitch softball, allow me to offer you this perspective:
They are making the calls TOO QUICKLY. When I was being trained, and when attending our annual training techniques/updates meetings, our Umpire-in-Chief was ADAMANT that you WAIT a “tick” for the play to FINISH — i.e., a catch can be bobbled or dropped, not to mention a tag — when in doubt, say it out loud — “SHOW ME THE BALL!” The ump last night even conceded as much in his postgame comments. Not only are you more thorough — as our UIC told us, you can SELL your call so much better if you wait that “tick” and let your brain process what you just saw (there ain’t no replays in slo-pitch, of course)!!
I’ve also heard, but haven’t confirmed, that MLB umps are like SCOTUS judges — once they make it to The Show, they CAN’T be fired or sent down. Hope that’s not true, but enlighten me if you know. Tell “Blue” to SLOW DOWN YOUR CALL; be SURE. Betcha that if Girardi were to tell them that at some future blown call (and let’s hope it’s a painless one) that the ump(s) in question will REMEMBER their ancient training…
Diane, thank you for mentioning today’s game is during the day – I did not realize that and would have been tuning in at 7 p.m. It’s 1:02 now and the game is just about to start – Go Andy! Go Yankees!
You’re welcome, Audrey – right now we are winning 4 – 3 in the 7th inning but I also just heard that C.C. is on the 15 day DL. That’s not good.
Much worse news than CC, everyone. Andy’s ankle was fractured. I can’t believe it.
The Andy news is devastating. Losing CC for a couple of weeks was bad enough but now this? There’s going to have to be a lot of rising to the challenge on the part of the rest of the team.
OMG, I didn’t hear about Andy. That’s awful. Well, we got a W even though Soriano loaded the bases. What are we going to do without Pettitte?
