Not A Janer But Almost

June 25th, 2012 by Jane Heller

And I thought maybe the Yankees would have a letdown after the big Subway Series. Silly me. Instead, they pounded the Indians on the first day of HOPE Week and it was so relaxing. Good pitching, good hitting and good defense – that’s how you win ballgames – and the Yankees did it all.

I wonder if Cano is practicing for the Home Run Derby coming up. His swing sure looked ready. And Swisher had an active night both at the plate and in the field. But the surprise was Wise, and I credit Cashman for picking him up. I knew he had a great glove, but who knew he could handle the bat?

I can’t say enough about Kuroda and the job he did. Just an excellent all-around effort by the boys. I realize that the Indians aren’t exactly a top-tier team, but so what. Winning by a bunch of runs is fun.

Finally a win where I didn’t tear my hair out in the process of getting it! Not quite a Janer but just what my nerves needed.

Now let’s do the same thing tomorrow!

And congrats to AZ on dethroning the Gamecocks. The Yankees made a very good 5th round draft choice, looks like.

I don’t follow college baseball, Sean, so no clue which teams were even playing.

A relaxing win=happiness. It felt like a Janer.

I’ve had to cut back watching games every night, so I’m now recording them in my office and watching them the next day. Sounds like the game I’m about to watch is a gem!

Happy Birthday to The Captain! I’m wearing my #2 shirt today, in tribute.

The Arizona Wildcats and the South Carolina Gamecocks were the two teams competing for the College World Series the past two nights. I live in Omaha so it’s hard NOT to know what’s going on. I watched some of the games and did get to see AZ win last night. Their right fielder, Robert Refsnyder, was MVP and was drafted by the Yankees a few weeks back. It’d be so much fun to see him come up with New York, but you never know.

Happy Birthday Mr. Jeter! Hope you and the boys can get a win for your b-day! I appreciate the birthday win yesterday for my Pops. He spent the day in Fargo, ND meeting Roger Maris’s wife & family, visiting the RM museum, and golfing with Vikings great and Iowa State hall of famer Matt Blair. I’d say he had a pretty good day. =)

That was the first game in quite a while that there was pretty much no question it was going to be a win. Kuroda was magic – I think he only gave up 3 hits while he was in. And the bats of course were amazing. I always love Swisher’s obvious enjoyment of playing baseball, but last night he seemed especially pleased.

While I know he did not have any major involvement in the outcome of this game, I must comment on Raul Ibanez. He was essentially hired to be a DH and he has done everything else as well. I’m sure he didn’t know he was going to be playing the field as much as The Yankees have needed him to do, and I don’t know if its something positive or not for him, but he is working hard, doing his job and making himself part of Yankee history. Looking for another win tonight…GO YANKEES!!!

Dave forwarded me the Yankees fantasy camp info yesterday…there is a 3-day camp for women…have any She-Fans ever done it? I can’t afford to do it, but would be stupid enough to go forth if I had someone to go with…and if it was ‘worth it.’

  8. Sean K says:

Happy b’day, Captain. Hopefully it’ll be a winning one.

  9. Jane Heller says:

It did feel like one, didn’t it, Barbara?

The fantasy camp sounds like fun, Ruth. I know a few women from Twittter who’ve been involved. I hope you’ve watched the game by now and shared our enjoyment.

Wow about your father, DJ! That’s so cool that he met the Maris family on his birthday. I’ve always admired them and, of course, Roger.

I agree about Ibanez, Diane. I was bashing him every day here during spring training and couldn’t imagine what Cashman was thinking when he signed him. I guess that’s why he’s the GM and I have a blog. LOL

A jolly good evening. Maybe not a Janer, but a “laugher” just the same.

dj, isn’t that great about your dad’s day. Roger’s always held a special place in my memories. Could never understand why he was treated so badly back in the day, but I was a young boy and didn’t understand all the inner tensions and rivalries (and the utter idolatry of Ruth, which had a big* influence*). Congrats!

And speaking of RUTH — the female variety — well, I’m glad you got the e-mail! Jane and Diane didn’t reply, making me think that either (a) this is old news or (b) who cares. Jane’s got 100 other priorities, anyway, which I knew, so it was just “FYI” for her, and of course she knew. Sure wish my wife was a fan…she loves baseball, I’d sign her up in a heartbeat, and I’d come watch!! Alas, that’s not the case. But it was one of the greatest weeks of my life when I went, so I hope you do get to go someday…

    Hi, everybody!

Hope everyone is doing well. I wanted to say hi, and bring up that it’s Derek Jeter’s birthday. 38, and still going.

I was happy to see Andy Pettitte and A-Rod on the Today Show yesterday. They were promoting Hope Week. I can’t wait to see this year’s stories. They’re always very inspirational. I’m still sad that I missed bumping into Jane Lynch a few years ago at a Baltimore game.

    Have a great day, all!

I’m so sorry I missed Andy and A-Rod on “Today,” Becky. I’m sure there will be clips though, so I’ll look when I have a chance. Thanks!
