Chamberlain hospitalized with ankle injury

Joba Chamberlain had surgery last night and remains in St. Josephs hospital after suffering an open dislocation of his right ankle.

The injury happened yesterday while Chamberlain was playing with his son.

Brian Cashman called it a significant injury and said there’s no word on how long Chamberlain will be out. Whether this threatens his season or even his career, Cashman said, is still unclear.

Excuse me? He was playing with his son and now his season, not to mention his career, might be over?

Apparently, he was with his son at some kids’ facility and may have been jumping on a – wait for it – trampoline.

I’m sure there’s no clause in anybody’s contract specifically ruling out trampoline jumping, and I certainly don’t fault the guy for spending quality time with his boy. It’s just soooo sad.

First Dave Robertson trips down the stairs at home while carrying a box, but at least he’s pitching again and didn’t lose that much time. A dislocation and surgery doesn’t sound good at all. And to think Joba was making progress after his long layoff after TJ surgery. Everyone, including me, was hopeful he’d really contribute this year, maybe as soon as June. It just goes to show that there is never enough pitching to compensate for injuries, freakish or otherwise.

Cashman called the injury “devastating” to the NYT. Sometimes news like this makes me want to go back to sleep. Ugh.

P.S. Now there’s news about injured Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks. Via hardballtalk.nbcsports.com:

Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks was arrested in Ft. Myers at 3:43 AM this morning. The charges: DUI, property damage and hit-and-run, suggesting that he crashed his car and tried to take off.

Jenks was not expected to pitch for a long, long time — he’s on the 60-day disabled list — but it’s not like that makes this news any better.

Yikes. Is there a full moon or something?

I would be a bit more upset if we didn’t discover Adam Warren last night. The young man did a real nice job against most of the Sox starters.

Bobby V fired another salvo with his being PO’d Girardi didn’t want to keep playing last night. Ft. Meyers is 2 plus hours from Tampa and Yanks have split squad today after playing in Port Charlotte Wednesday. Daa! If they gave frequent bus rider miles, Yanks would hit the jackpot this week.

Inquiring minds want to know, where have all the bloggers gone????

Such a shame to hear this news. Joba was just being a good father and playing with his kid and this freak accident happens. I don’t doubt that he will likely be out for the season. An open dislocation is a very serious injury but it shouldn’t by any means threaten his career once he fully recovers. I really wish him well for a speedy recovery as he was a core arm for the bullpen. But the Yanks will be okay. They’re stacked with arms in AAA with Phelps, Warren, Mitchell, and of course, Banuelos and Betances. One of them can slot in Joba’s spot although the B’s may be better off further developing in AAA at their own pace.

  3. Terri says:

I just read about the injury myself to Joba! Yikes! I read that bone was through the skin? That’s so serious, and I wish him the absolute best in recovery. Hadn’t heard about Jenks though, I’m going to have to probe deeper in that one!

  4. Section 36 says:

You can be a good father without getting on a trampoline. Especially when you’re an athlete who depends on your legs and/or ankles. It’s just a choice you have to make.

  5. Jane Heller says:

Adam Warren pitched a very nice game last night, John, and we do have a lot of good young arms. But this is Joba we’re talking about. Aside from stalling his comeback, the injury could very well be a career-ender for him. I understand why he’d want to jump on a trampoline to bond with his kid and I feel sorry for him that this has happened, but I question the wisdom of the deed. Trampolines look like fun, but I know people who’ve gotten hurt on them. As for the Valentine flap, just more fun for the rivalry. He doesn’t think before he speaks – ever.

Yup, a shame for Joba, Leo. Cashman sounded really shaken up in his conversation with the media. I hope you’re right and he recovers, but the time missed will be considerable and that’s the problem. Can he come back? We’ll see. As for the freak accident part, as I said to John, I understand why he’d want to play with his kid, but how about just watching while the KID jumps on the trampoline!

It is serious, Terri. And yeah, go check out the Jenks story. It’s not pretty.

    I agree, Section 36.

When I heard this I was like ….really a trampoline? Common sense somewhere?
C’mon! I feel badly because this sounded horrific. But it also made me a bit angry.
I realize they don’t have an actual clause to say…no trampoline. but they must have something in general where this would fall, no pun intended. C’mon everyone falls on these what the hell was he thinking?!
I fear we will never see him actually pitch again in pinstripes. I hope I’m wrong.

  7. Jane Heller says:

There’s been such a mixture of emotions on Twitter about this today, Peg. Some are angry, like you, and say Joba is a bonehead. Others say they understand a dad wanting to play with his kid – particularly a single dad. And still others say that freak accidents can happen anywhere (as with Dave Robertson). So is it an Aaron Boone type situation or just a mishap? All I know is that Rafael Soriano must be saying, “Wow. They’re dropping like flies and I’m still here!”

  8. Freya says:

I see it as very bad judgment on Joba’s part.

  9. Jane Heller says:

Yes, bad judgment, Freya. But after reading the piece on the Daily News site just now (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/yankees-joba-chamberlain-suffers-significant-injury-ankle-article-1.1049622), all I feel is sorry for Joba. His injury is beyond scary.

  10. SBlue says:

When I first heard this news about Joba, it sounded really scary. Even the image of it looks cringing. I really hope that Joba can even play after this freak accident cause if not…it would be really devastating. I like him as a reliever and his happy personality.

  11. Jane Heller says:

The image of it makes me cringe too, SBlue. Fingers crossed that he can come back from the injury.

  12. Freya says:

Yes Jane, after reading the Daily News article I too feel very sorry for Joba, and I hope that he can recover.

  13. Roberta says:

Bad judgement … Yes. I am so sad for Joba … But I know he will be back. I am praying for him.

  14. Jane Heller says:

Freya and Roberta, you probably read that Joba is supposed to be released from the hospital today, barring any complication. That’s good news, I would think. He has a long road ahead of him, but he just might pitch again. I hope so for his sake.
