I know, I know. It was only the second spring training game and the players are supposed to screw up because they’re just practicing. But in today’s contest against the Phillies, Nuneeeee picked up right where he left off and I do hope he’ll improve his defense this year. He’s a terrific hitter and base runner, so I’m rooting for him to succeed – if he doesn’t make a lot of errors.
On the bright side, it was another victory for the boys today. Yay. And it gave me a chance to drool over the possibility of Cole Hamels in pinstripes next year.

Ohh Jane, as soon as I saw Nuneeeee make that error I thought “For sure Jane is gonna worry and write a post about it!” :D ahahahah :)
I really really really hope he’ll improve, but I wouldn’t bet on it though.
It was fun to see those good young kids play well, from Phelps to Banuelos, to Garner. And today all the big boys will be in the lineup! Can’t wait!
I think he’ll improve, Paul. He just has to stop getting nervous and realize he already has the job. I’ll give him all of spring training to get the kinks out. But if he keeps making errors during the first month of the season, I’ll start yelling.
Cole Hamels in pinstripes…? Hmm…
Speaking of pinstripes, did you see this? http://riveraveblues.com/2011/12/yankees-to-wear-1912-throwbacks-for-fenway-parks-100th-anniversary-61538/
Are they really doing this? The Yankees never wear anything other than their regular uniforms. This would be… interesting. As long as they don’t make it a habit.
let’s take stock of the Nunez situation- all the years prior, all the playing time he got last year, and the offseason, and he’s still juggling. To me, consistent, reliable fielding from this guy would constitute an aberration. A college player on a decent team performing at his level would have a backup breathing down his neck. Nice player, but, how long can a case of the jitters still be called just that?
“As long as they don’t make it a habit” is right, YankeeCase. One of the things that’s great about the Yankees is that they don’t need different uniforms as gimmicks. I get that the Red Sox organization wants to celebrate their ballpark, but why do the Yankees have to go retro too? Odd.
As it’s been pointed out here on the blog, NYL, Cano was a big error-maker early in his career and he turned out more than okay. Nunez has a strong arm and he might just need more seasoning. I’m willing to give him a longer leash.
