Random Thoughts

February 16th, 2012 by Jane Heller

* Sad news today about Gary Carter. From everything I’ve read he sounded like a terrific guy with a loving family. He sure was a great catcher.

* The A.J. Trade Watch continues. If his wife had gotten over her fear of flying, A.J. would have been on the Angels by now and we would have had Bobby “I’m Afraid of the Wall” Abreu back. Oh, well. Maybe by the time I wake up here in California tomorrow, the deal with the Pirates will have been done.

* The story about Bobby Valentine and his grumbling Red Sox players made me laugh.

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Wednesday that his spring training regimen he laid out has so far been met with some grumbling from players who aren’t used to his more demanding style.

“When I look at the program we devised, I don’t think of it as tough. But it seems it’s different because a lot of people are frowning. I just asked them to give (it) a few days,” Valentine said, according to The Boston Globe.

* Only a few more days until P&C, people.

I am officially in the baseball mode. I got my Yanks vs Braves March 10th tickets at Disney in the mail yesterday. Got fair deal on e-bay for this game. Other 4 games good old Ray has come through again. Time to dust off suitecases and dig out the shorts and Yankee gear. Leave three weeks from today!

    I “Do” Live For This!

Yup, John. Better start packing and getting those T-shirts and caps ready for action.

Read the quick tickler-news about AJ turning down the trade, and remembered that somebody said he doesn’t want to relocate off the east coast. Thanx for providing further depth.

Sad about Gary Carter. Like you, I knew him only thru Big Events and his many achievements. They say that he was always smiling, always loving the game, like a latter-day Ernie Banks. May we somehow see some more “Kids” like him…

And of course, there’s a segue to the Sawx. Seeing the frequent video clips of Carter and the ’86 Series. Remembering how, last Xmas in B’ham, my sis drove me past a Popeye’s Fried Chicken. It was almost lunchtime, so I said “STOP! Go back to Popeye’s. My treat for lunch today.” We arrived back at the house with a big ol’ bucket of chicken and a cold six-pack of Heineken (bro-in-law’s favorite). I announced, loudly and proudly:

Spent the next few days re-explaining it to Dear Old Mom…my nephew posted on Facebook what ‘Uncle Dave’ had provided for lunch, and added “OUCH.” Well worth whatever it cost!!

Supposedly, the Yankees are just waiting for MLB to approve the money issue on the AJ-to-Pittsburgh deal, Dave. Maybe it’ll get done today. Funny story about you buying the chicken for everybody.
