Another Incomplete For Me

August 3rd, 2011 by Jane Heller

It’s 17-7 in the 7th and I’m done for the night. I’m hoping we’ll end up scoring 20, but I’ll settle for a win – especially given AJ’s dismal performance.

Is there anyone who faults Girardi for pulling him in the 5th? As Michael Kay said, it’s the manager’s job to get the team a win, not the pitcher a win. It just stinks that the Yankees finally gave AJ some real run support and he couldn’t hold it together. He was seriously mad when he stormed into the dugout. He ripped off his shirt like guys do in the movies before they’re about to punch someone or something.

Yes, the offense was fabulous but AJ is the story of the night. Now do we wish we’d traded for a #2 pitcher?

It was fun seeing Bruney again. Maybe he did get robbed on that call at first base, but his ejection reminded me of the episode when he had words with K-Rod. Good, good times.

I’m almost afraid to turn off the TV. I feel a brawl coming on – or at least a few plunkings of Yankees batters. I hope I’m wrong and this blowout ends peacefully. It’s not our fault that the White Sox are awful this year.

Aww, Jane! You went to sleep?! Watching the Yanks on the East coast isn’t the same, huh? And then there’s the one hour time difference in Chicago. Imagine what we go through when they’re in your neck of the woods! lol

Well the score ended up being 18-7, with the Yankees getting 23 hits! Including 5 hits from Jeter! And… all of a sudden his batting average is at .280 for the season. Doesn’t look too washed up now, does he? Didn’t a certain Mr. Y. Case say something about not giving up on the Captain? Let the haters keep hating!

AJ definitely didn’t have his best stuff, but it’s so great to see the bullpen step up as they have, only giving up one hit. Wade and Ayala have been great and they weren’t going to let a lopsided score crap up their focus. If Soriano starts to pitch like he did last year, and when either Nova or Hughes get sent to the ‘pen because of the logjam of starting pitching, things may just be scary good out where Mariano roams…

Speaking of where Mariano roams, you haven’t set up camp on his front lawn yet have you? :D

an incomplete isn’t an F. or else i would fail the yankees often. i often say, as i try to fall asleep and am trying not put the game back on, i will assume they win and if they do i am happy. if they lose i am glad i went to sleep and didn’t watch it. i am often up at 5 to exercise before work so staying up for games that start at 8 is a challenge. just one more reason why i often think of moving to california. at least there was lots of offense before going to sleep last night!.
ok so what is the answer to the question of who doesn’t pitch isn’t nova or hughes but is aj? i doubt joe would do that but last night was scary.

  3. Antonella says:

    Hi Jane!
I see that once again we didn’t get our 20 runs ;)

I watched the post game praying that AJ wouldn’t have a fit.. Like always, he took full resposibility (still didn’t make the situation any less annoying) I’m glad we got the W. It’s nice to be on a roll before the nerve wrecking series that awaits us. Sigh.

Can we just skip the Boston series?

  4. Audrey says:

Yes, AJ finally gets run support and still can’t hold on for the win. I agree with Barbara – AJ is the one who should be removed from the starting rotation, not Hughes or Nova. I am so glad he is not pitching against Boston and cringe to consider what might happen in the post-season with him on the mound. His pitching is starting to remind me of my golf game – a few flashes of brilliance but, for the most part, just bad.

But the Yankee offense had more than just a few flashes of brilliance! Those boys were hot last night, especially the Captain. Now that he had passed 3,000 it’s fun to watch him move up the list toward #1. Wonder where he will finally land?

I watched the end of the Boston game. For some reason my husband thinks 3-3 ties are more interesting than Yankee blowouts but whatever, I can compromise as long as I have control of the remote. I kept willing Cleveland to channel their inner Yankees and hit a homerun in the ninth but it was Ellsbury who did so instead. I screamed and pounded the couch when he hit that blast (and it was quite a blast, with two out in the bottom of the ninth). I hate them all.

So tonight Nova has to bring it and give us the sweep. This weekend is going to be nervewracking. If it weren’t for all the games we still have against each other I’d almost believe the Yanks and Red Sox could go the rest of the season without losing again.

Watching night games from the east coast when they’re in central time doesn’t do it for me, YankeeCase. I’m staying up later than I normally would and it’s making me bump into walls during the day. California is the place to be for watching baseball! Yes, Jeter had a great night – just like the one when he hit 3,000. I kept thinking that I hope the offense doesn’t dry up for the series at Fenway – and I mean for all of them. We’re going to need lots and lots of hits this weekend. AJ was miserable, and I feel sorry for him because he’s been better this season, avoiding meltdowns and limiting damage. But the bullpen has been great. My guess is Hughes will go to the pen, not Nova, but it’s really a tossup. Joe keeps saying, “Hughes won 18 games last year,” which leads me to believe they still like him in the rotation. I haven’t ventured over to Mo’s house yet, knowing he’s in Chicago! LOL

Yes, move to California, Barbara, and we can watch games together! I don’t see AJ going to the pen at all, despite all the pleas for that to happen on Twitter last night. He’s too wild, for one thing. You can’t have a guy come into a tight game in relief, only to have him not throw strikes. For another thing, I just don’t see the Yankees demoting him. Larry Rothschild is just going to have to “get him right,” as they say.

Hi Antonella. Nope. No 20 runs, despite my asking for them. As we saw last night, 10 isn’t always enough – not when the opposition scores 7. Too close for comfort. Good to hear that AJ took responsibility in the postgame interviews and didn’t act all surly and defensive. Now if only he could pitch with consistency. Sigh.

I’m glad AJ isn’t pitching in Boston too, Audrey, but CC’s record at Fenway isn’t so hot, if I remember correctly, and Garcia was blown out against the Red Sox, wasn’t he? So I’m not feeling confident about anybody on that mound! Too bad Ellsbury hit one out for them last night. It would have been nice for them to go into extras – a lot of extras, tire themselves out and then lose. Oh, well.

  6. Margaret says:

AJ frustrates me….I fell asleep before it was over and before they had 7.
I was thankful to see we won but not entirely happy.

This weekend is going to be tough on me. (and it’s all about me right?)
And then the ARod gambling story. I want to just slap some sense into that boy.
    Good grief what next?

  7. Rachel says:

I definitely don’t blame Girardi. AJ couldn’t hold it together, and we needed to win a game that we had a 13-1 lead in. As far as I’m concerned, AJ is not our #2 starter, even if his salary says he is. Colon is our number 2 starter, and you could even make the case for Garcia. If he wants to be considered our #2 again for a reason other than his salary, he needs to get it together. I think he has obvious talent and can be a great pitcher, but it seems to me he’s very mentally fragile, which is what does him in every time.

I heard that they were considering using a 6 man rotation for the rest of the season, but with CC pitching every five days. I like that idea a lot, actually, assuming it doesn’t start affecting anyone’s performance. Extra rest for Freddy & Bart wouldn’t be the worst thing, and if either Hughes or Nova starts pitching like crap, we can just go back to the five man.

  8. Jane Heller says:

I didn’t even include the A-Rod story in my post because I think it’s such a non-story, Peg. I don’t know enough about gambling or even poker to know what an “underground” game really is. But my feeling is that if an adult person plays poker for money (even a lot of money) with other adult persons in the privacy of their own home, who cares? Unless, of course, there are illegal activities (drugs, prostitution, organized crime) involved. And are we really taking the word of The Star these days? I don’t see Matt Damon or Ben Affleck being questioned by the Screen Actors Guild.

AJ didn’t blame Girardi either, Rachel, which was a good thing. And I don’t even know if his problems last night were mental or mechanical. He really has been a hard luck pitcher this year, with the Yankees not scoring runs for him so despite my frustration with him, I’m willing to give him a pass for last night. Do I trust him in key situations? No. Do I wish we had traded for another pitcher? Yes.

  9. Margaret says:

Apparently Jane because of ole Pete Rose they are concerned with Alex around gamblers.
While to me it is a stretch to assume poker to betting on baseball that is where MLB went.
Apparently he was reprimanded once already by the Yankees and MLB and was told not to do it again.
So yesterday when Bud Selig made the comment that a suspension would be considered I wanted to hit him for doing this again.
I too agree it’s not a big deal but if he was told not to and did it anyway then it rather pisses me off.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon play in poker tournaments that are considered legal because they are sanctioned by the Gaming commission. The games we are talking about are completely different.
Alex says he will cooperate with MLB so time will tell if this is an issue or not.
We just don’t need any more distractions!

  10. Bob Cerv says:

Sheesh. Such a night. Glad you got some x-tra zzz’s, Miz J! After the Bosawx series is over, you’ll be adapted to our east coast groove of paying attention for half a game, and then goodnight sweetheart, well, it’s time to go…!

Barbara stated it best. You get to that decision point quickly. It was pretty e-z last nite (or at least it shoulda been)…when I first emerged from the basement to get a score, it was already 8-1, and there’s another hit by Jeet, and now it’s 10-1. Oh goody…no need to watch, right? But then, ESPN has this habit of re-broadcasting games before 5am (I’m usually getting coffee & getting it together then), and the first thing they show when I tune in is some ChiSox fans whooping it up. What the…?!? But now I know the rest of the story. As you said about A.J. — sigh…

Hey, it’s a series win, in a 4-game series, on the road. Maybe more. Expect no help, and we got none. Let’s not overvalue or overemphasize the weekend, please…it’s still early August, many dog days ahead. Remember…we’re not worthy of carrying their smelly red hose this year…right?

As for A-Rod — yes please, Margaret, SMACK that boy for us, willya? From what I heard, there were drugs at this par-tay, and some schlub got PO’d about a $500K loss of stakes, and raised a ruckus. That’s a lotta steaks, even for those RichBoyz…and with at LEAST two BoSox fanatix at the table (maybe more — bet they’re working on DiCaprio)…I suspect evildoings with added intent. Plus MLB told him not to.

Sounds disturbingly familiar…staying up way too late, pissing away $$, doing what you’re specifically told not to do…y’know, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear it was MY son Alex (aka WildChild, Son #2) at the table…give him $500K of stakes, put him in that environment, and this is exactly what he’d do!!

  11. seindsfeld says:

You know who’s a good pitcher? Nova. Nova’s a great pitcher. You know who I want to punch in the head? Burnett. Phil Hughes did the same thing, but he was still sort of getting his rhythm back from being on the DL, Burnett has no excuse. He just sucks. You’d think CC having 16 wins, and two “washed up” pitchers doing better than him at this point might make him think “Gee, maybe I should pitch a little better, at least get my record OVER .500.” But no, in fact, maybe it’s making him worse. Too much tattoo ink has gotten to his brain, and yeah, he won Game 2 of the World Series, but more and more he just looks lost. He’s never won a game in August as a Yankee… so there’s that too. As for the runs, holy moly, what are they eating in Chicago? Think they can stay there a few more weeks? Maybe rent a hotel instead going back to New York? As bad as the Chisox have been playing, they should only plunk themselves. Would have loved to hear Ozzie after that game lol.

  12. Jane Heller says:

I get the disappointment in AJ, seindsfeld, but he hasn’t been that bad except for last night. What’s more, do you honestly think he’s not trying to pitch better? Some guys just have more success in NY than others.

  13. new yawk lover says:

time to break out the coffee press, Jane, can’t be missing the final stanzas of the upcoming games now, can we. Last night was an ugly one, with AJ emulating the pitching style of Robbie Cano’s dad again. It wouldn’t have been right to leave him in to get a win, given the way he pitched. He’s still better than expected this season,I think.

MLB needs to butt out of A Rods, and everyone elses private affairs. Playing pro sports, just like any other job, should not entail surrendering ones personal freedoms. Seems the McCarthyist zealotry of the steroid witch hunt lives on. Anybody who tries to tell me what I can or can’t do in the privacy of my home, or the homes of friends can kiss my ass, and why should A Rod have to feel any differently?

I hope you and yours are enjoying the trip, by the way

  14. Jane Heller says:

I get the Pete Rose connection, Peg, I really do. But Ben Affleck and Matt Damon played in the same poker game as A-Rod (they were there together). That was the point I was making. I heard Cashman on NY radio today saying he thought the whole thing was a media driven story and not worth bothering about. I agree.

Dave, see above. I know A-Rod was warned about poker games but they were public games. So in a sense he followed MLB’s request and took his poker playing private. If it doesn’t upset Cashman, it shouldn’t upset us.

NYL, I guess you and I are on the same page about this poker thing. I find it intrusive to the max that MLB would try to dictate where and what a player can do in his spare time (barring any illegal activities, of course). I haven’t noticed anybody from MLB getting involved in the lives of players who’ve been guilty of DUIs or domestic abuse. And yes, I’m enjoying the trip very much, thanks.

  15. Jane Heller says:

P.S. Regarding A-Rod and the infamous poker game, here’s a link worth reading. Apparently, he wasn’t even there. http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2011/08/04/rodriguez-gets-started-in-tampa-denies-poker-accusations/

  16. seindsfeld says:

Uh… I never said he wasn’t trying Jane, I just said he sucks. I’m sure he tries every time he’s pitching, but it’s not good enough, especially when he’s supposed to be the number 2 pitcher. I know maybe the Yanks haven’t always given him great run support, but he has to deal with that, as a pitcher. Maybe Colon and Garcia are pitching better because they don’t have an 80 million dollar contract and know this could be their last shot. Burnett can have a crappy outing and say, “Well, there’s always next start.” Then Nova comes out and gives 1 run. But because of this moron Nova has to go to the Minors. He can try all he wants, but if he can’t execute there’s no excuses.
