First, there’s a rain delay in Chicago because there’s a threat of rain. Now, there’s a rain delay because it’s actually raining. And I’m not waiting up to see if they’ll resume play because they should have started the game on time to begin with!
Well, and because I’m really tired from traveling and changing time zones and all of that.
Besides, the Yankees seem to have this one well in hand.
How great was Hughes? I’ve been knocking him for weeks (okay, months), but he really turned it up a notch tonight, throwing quality strikes with velocity and keeping his pitch count down and getting swings and misses. Maybe Cashman was right and we didn’t need another starter after all.
And Tex. Wow. Homers from both sides – the most ever. I was sure Mickey Mantle would have had more, but apparently not.
So I’m going to bed figuring the Yankees won this, hoping the Red Sox lost their game and dreaming that we’re back in first place where we belong.
‘Night.

Well we’re not in first place yet as the Red Sox ended up winning as well. Hughes tonight brought back flashes of his dominant first half of 2010 self. Let’s hope there’s more where that came from and he has a chance to prove he can do it against a strong offensive team. To think at the trade deadline that he was being offered up in a trade for Jimenez. Not like anything would’ve came of it as Colorado was the one that scoffed at the offer and wouldn’t let Ubaldo take a preliminary physical anyway. Who else isn’t that upset that Cashman didn’t get a trade done in the deadline? Other than Ubaldo, there wasn’t much else worth getting to give up our good prospects.
the problem with the east coast is staying up for the end of games. as a morning person i often miss the end of games. i was exhausted last night and didn’t even catch the beginning so i woke up in the middle of the night and talked myself out of going downstairs to get the score. then i nervously just turned on the computer to find out who won. i assumed hughes was terrible and we lost. i was so happy to be wrong and so happy to see another victory!
Great game, even though it got started late due to non-existent rain again. Joh and Suzyn were fit to be tied about that situation again. I didn’t stay up till the end either, figuring Hughes and Tex had things well in hand.
So Phil Hughes got a haircut – looks good. Also explains his overpowering performance. Has anyone else noticed the Yankees are the opposite of Samson? The less hair they have, the better they play. Maybe they should all shave their heads for the weekend.
Oh, bummer that the Red Sox won their game, Leo. You’re so right about Hughes. He did show flashes of his old brilliance – more than flashes, in fact. He was consistent for the entire game, rain shortened though it was. I’m not upset that we didn’t get a pitcher in a trade, but I would have been if Hughes hadn’t reassured me last night.
I now see why it’s so hard to watch night games on the east coast, Barbara – especially if they start in central time and even more so if there’s a rain delay. Ugh. In California they start at 4 pm so there’s plenty of evening left after they’re over. Glad you woke up to good news.
I don’t understand this new trend of having a rain delay without rain, Audrey. They didn’t always do it. I get that they don’t want to have to start and stop – God forbid the fragile pitchers should lose their start or get injured or something – but it’s just silly to depend on Doppler Radar. Yeah, Hughes got a haircut. He also put on some weight. Or was it my TV? He just looked a little chunkier than he used to.
Okey dokey so far. Jane, WELCOME to the East Coast SleepySide Yanks Fans-Club. Now you can begin to understand why, much as I’d loove to pay extra for a Yank$ cable package, it just doesn’t work for those of us whose working hours begin at 7am EST (so ya get up around 5am, or earlier)…
Happy to see Hughes Chance (my new name for him; better than Hughes Disappointment, or worse) show some mo’ of what he CAN do…channeling Allie Reynolds for one night! Now let’s get A.J. to do some channeling of Vic Raschi…?
And extra-happy to see Tex set the new record. Like you, I’m surprised that Mick didn’t hold it — it was co-held by Eddie Murray (a boyhood hero of Tex…now, remember, he WAS a Maryland boy) — and — Chili Davis?!? Nope, unworthy, Yankee years aside. Now Tex, that’s a different story…!
Hope you got some good shut-eye last nite so you’re adjusted to the east and our (clink clink)…sssteam heat…may you find Lord Mo somewhere in your travels, and have a grand visit everywhere…
I do understand about trying to stay awake for the games, Dave, especially since you have to get up so early. I’ve totally adjusted to the weather. It’s been beautiful and not as hot as you have in MD. Yes, let’s hope AJ follows Hughes’ great outing. I want us in winning shape for Fenway.
I don’t know where to go to ask this question, but I figure with your contacts you might know someone with the answers. On Monday there was a story in the NY Post on line (I know, owned by Murdoch) that said the Yankees had placed Burnett, Posada and Soriano on waivers. I thought that was ridiculous, and combed the other sports pages to find a similar report. Nothing. And I haven’t seen any retraction from the Post either. Have you (or anyone else out there) heard this?
I didn’t see the Post on Monday, Corinne, and I haven’t heard about that story. It sounds ridiculous to me too!
