Take THAT!

July 5th, 2011 by Jane Heller

To all those who didn’t vote CC onto the All-Star team. The big man just notched the most wins in the majors, dominated his old team and gave us the depth we needed with a short-staffed bullpen.

Take THAT!

To all those who didn’t think Jeter was still a viable member of the New York Yankees. He not only got a couple more hits, including an important gapper, and edged ever closer to the 3,000 mark, but he did a nifty pirouette at short to get the runner at first.

Take THAT!

To all those who didn’t think Curtis Granderson was worth trading Austin Jackson for. He not only has made AJax a mere memory, but he’s on an absolute home run tear this season with no signs of slowing down.

Take THAT!

To all those who didn’t think anybody named Lance Pendleton could pitch….

Oh, wait. He can’t. Never mind.

Great game for the boys. I appreciate that they allowed me to feel safe enough after the seventh inning to leave the house and go out with friends for dinner. If anybody’s ever in Santa Barbara, I highly recommend anything on the menu at Tre Luna. Yum.

My Physical Therapist is a Yankee fan. She told me to work hard on Yankee victories as part of my treatment plan. I told her I will recruit aide from a strong influence on the web (you).

Last nights therapy was very rewarding.

Blue Jay runner was safe in the 9th last night. Sox got a big gift.

  2. Melissa says:

Another thing we have in common John – my Physical Therapist was also a Yankee fan.

I was listening on the radio. Suzyn told John that Curtis’s first home run equaled the number he had all last season and his next homer would beat that total. John said something like “The way he is hitting the ball, that homer will come soon.” Next thing you know, John is singing “The Grandyman can.” They were laughing about it.

It constantly amazes me how CC gets such run support. Last year it was Huuuughes. Let’s hope he comes back strong. It is comforting to know that if he doesn’t, Nova is waiting in the wings.

  3. Jeff says:

Still don’t understand the C.C. snub myself. As for Grandy, good lord the dude is on pace for 50+ homers! He grew up close to where I live and went to school just down the street at UIC so there is a large Grandy fangroup around here… folks are still upset the White Sox didn’t give him a look.

I stand ready to be your long-distance aide, John. How convenient that your PT is a Yankee fan. I’m sure your sessions will be painless. And with wins like last night’s, your rehab will take no time at all.

So John is psychic, Melissa? LOL. I was thinking the same thing about the run support CC gets. I was picturing AJ sitting in the dugout and muttering, “How come they never do this for me?” I must admit I’m a little nervous about Hughes tonight. I’m sure he’s nervous too. I just hope he gets off to a good start, but it’s definitely comforting knowing Nova is waiting.

No clue about the CC snub, Jeff. It’s baffling. Does he have the lowest ERA in the majors? No. The most wins? Yes. Is he a former CY Young winner? Yes. Is he the ace of the Yankees? Yes. What am I missing? I coveted Grandy for a long time before the Yankees got him, so I’m ecstatic that he’s doing so well.

  5. Uncle Mike says:

Need we remind everyone that CC’s ERA is 2.90? And this is in the American League, where he has to face 9 batters, not 8 plus a pitcher pretending to be a hitter. The question is, is Ron Washington back on drugs? Yeah, he’s on the most addictive and mind-warping drug of them all: Yankee Hatred.

It’s almost enough to make me root for the National League in the All-Star Game. But how can I root for a League with the Mets, Dodgers and Braves in it? I can’t. I can tolerate Orioles, Royals, Blue Jays, Devil Rays and Rangers, and even hold my nose and pretend for 4 hours that the Red Sox are honorable men; but not the Mutts, the O’Malleys and the John Rockers.

    The Stopper.
Talking with Son #2 (the Yank fan) last nite pre-game, we groaned about the last two games, both late-inning collapses, and I pointed out that at least Our Stopper is going tonight. Had to explain the meaning –he’s called that ’cause he STOPS losing streaks. Of course, that and a LOT more…
Love yer graphix today, She-Fan. You tell ‘em!! Sure am tired of all the snarky sniping at The Captain for his Undeserved Gold Glove of 2010, and he can’t even tie his cleats at the major league level anymore. Yeah, right. The only “nice” thing I’ve heard anyone say was from that snarky Mariners fan on ESPN, who said that at least Jeet was aging “like a real man,” proving that he wasn’t on PEDs. Nice left-handed compliment. Snarkies of America…last night was for YOU…
To me, there’s only one reason why CC The Stopper was left off the AS Team. “Too Many Yankees Already!” Since Jeet ‘doesn’t deserve it,’ nor A-Rod (admittedly), and Cano, and, and, and…well, dog-gone it, just Not Enough Hoseheads and Other Hosers for the Junior Circuit squad. That’s alright, let him rest…

  7. Jane Heller says:

You’re preaching to the choir when it comes to CC, Uncle Mike. It’s a miscarriage of justice! But if you’re still harboring resentment toward the Braves for John Rocker or the Dodgers for the O’Malleys, maybe it’s time to move on? LOL

Jeter is aging “like a real man?” Is that what they said on ESPN, Dave? Don’t even get me started on that comment. And btw, you don’t think A-Rod deserves to be an All-Star third baseman? Maybe you need to watch some games. He’s turned himself into a fabulous defender.

  8. Audrey says:

It’s always fun to come here and see your take on the game, Jane. You’re always so creative and funny!

Love all the comments here today. Sounds like we’ve all experienced a little frustration with the way our boys, especially Jeter, are treated in the media and by the other fans. Jealousy and envy are ugly things when as manifest by non-Yankee fans. But we’ll be dancing in October.

  9. Jane Heller says:

HAHA, Audrey. Don’t you love the ad with Alec Baldwin saying that? I also love that the excitement is building now for Jeter’s 3000th, although I’m kind of amazed he allowed the HBO cameras to shoot the lead-up to the big day, complete with access to his private life. Very Un-Jeter-like.

  10. Freya says:

I’m also amazed that Jeter is allowing HBO to film him. I was stunned that CC didn’t make the All Star roster, but it seem like he’s one great guy who is not about ego and it doesn’t bother him. I was also hoping that DRob would be on the list. Granderson became my favorite Yankee last year. He is just a super, quality person who is also very talented.

  11. Kathleen says:

I agree with Uncle Mike – Ron Washington just couldn’t stomach another Yankee. Doesn’t he realize that the AL needs ALL its great pitchers so we don’t lose home field advantage in the WS again this year! CC is superb and I send him my love! And why do the sports media always refer to Jeter as a polarizing figure? Michael Vick is a polarizing figure. Jeter is an upstanding, great guy, on the field and off.
Here’s to another win tonight, and Go Yankees!

  12. Jane Heller says:

Isn’t the HBO thing very uncharacteristic for Jeter, Freya? I was so surprised when I read about it. Maybe he’s been feeling unappreciated this year and decided it was okay to celebrate his accomplishments. But he’s usually so private about his life. Should be interesting viewing.

Does the media refer to Jeter as “polarizing,” Kathleen? I’ve never seen that word used to describe him so it’s curious. As you point out with the Michael Vick reference, Jeter is hardly controversial. I guess it’s the continuing debate among his detractors whether he should be leading off or not leading off, retire or not retire, etc.

  13. YankeeCase says:

    Haha! I love anime!

CC not being on the team is a joke. It really is. Ron Washington went ahead and picked his own guy, CJ Wilson instead who is currently 8-3 with a 3.02 ERA. A pretty good season for sure, but not better than CC’s. And what’s even more baffling is that CC is scheduled to start on the Sunday before the All-Star game. What that means is that he wouldn’t be allowed to pitch in the All-Star game if he does pitch that Sunday. CJ is scheduled to pitch this Friday…

So either there’s a conspiracy here, with some massive Yankee hate on display from Washington, or Ron Washington just didn’t think of the ‘strategy’ of his decision. I don’t think he’s dumb or really hates the Yankees, but what else can it be? A simple oversight?! I’m sure he regrets not getting CC on there, because he would still get CJ on the team. I remember last year Girardi had CC on the team and had left out Andy Pettitte on purpose, knowing he would get the well deserved spot since CC was going to be pitching that Sunday before the game as he will this year. Andy actually replaced an injured Buchholz, but Girardi had a spot all set for Pettitte.

Maybe we should slap some sense into Ron Washington, anime-style… (and CC might just have 13 wins after Sunday!!)

I’d love to see Jeter get another hit or two tonight, along with a strong outing from Hughes. I doubt he’d be getting this start if he wasn’t looking strong in recent weeks. A couple of good outings by him and Colon, and it would be safe to declare the pitching situation stabilized. Perhaps the mid season rest for these two will keep their arms fresh later into fall, for when we will really need them.

  15. Melissa says:

They must have read this blog. Pendleton was optioned to open a roster spot for Hughes

  16. Jane Heller says:

I don’t know about Ron Washington specifically, YankeeCase, but I don’t think there’s much love for the Yankees on the part of the Rangers organization. Maybe it’s not a conspiracy but rather that he’s just stupid.

Hughes has not looked good so far, NYL. I’m hoping it was just early jitters and he’ll settle down.

LOL, Melissa. Of course they read this blog!
