Three Questions

March 12th, 2011 by Jane Heller

#1) Have the Yankees ever beaten the Nationals?

I’m not just talking about spring training. I mean like ever. In the history of life. Because I honestly don’t remember a victory over the worst team in the majors. I realize today’s game was meaningless and the point was to give A.J. another opportunity to practice his new delivery. But it just feels like we can’t squash the gnats Nats and it’s a little disconcerting.

#2) Why is it a given that Eric Chavez will win a roster spot over Jorge Vazquez?

Yes, I know Chavez is a former Gold Glover and the far more experienced player. But Vazquez has gotten hit after hit (not to mention homer after homer) and I think he should get a shot at the job. A bona fide shot. Girardi keeps saying stuff like, “He’s giving us a lot to think about,” meaning Vazquez. But what he’s really saying is, “He’s going to the minors and we’ll call him up if Chavez gets hurt or doesn’t perform.” Am I right?

#3) Could Mo please pitch sometime soon?

I’ve read that his spring debut will be any day now. But until I actually see him on the mound with my own eyes, all will not be right with the world.

    Hey Jane!
I agree 100% with you on the Vazquez deal, we’ll see what happens.
Mo pitches tomorrow (Sunday).. At least, that’s what I read from one of the writers. The game will be on YES. I hope you see this in time LOL! This time change sucks!

  2. Jeff says:

Oh, you’ll see Mo alright. There are a lot of big leaguers who wish they’d never have to see him.

  3. Jane Heller says:

Mo is pitching today? Thanks for telling me, Antonella. I’ll be sure to watch. I’m so screwed up from changing the clocks though. I woke up at 5 am thinking it was 6 and am sooo tired.

HAHA, Jeff. So true. Seeing him pitch for the first time every season is like groundhog day – you know spring is here.

  4. Nadine says:

Also read that Mo is pitching today. Finally! :)
You’re right about Vazquez, Jane! He should get a shot at the job. I mean he is outstanding. Maybe Chavez is more experienced, but right now Vazquez is the better player. Let’s see what Girardi decides.
    Oh and wasn’t A.J. great yesterday? :D

Btw., I bought all my tickets for the games in late July, Jane. Let me know if you’re in the area. ;) I accidently bought tickets for the game on July 24th twice, so if any of you want to go to the game, I have two tickets I don’t need. LOL (was probably the excitement).

  5. Jane Heller says:

Funny that you double-bought tickets for the 24th, Nadine! You really must be excited about going to YS. I’m still shooting for August, I think. I’d like to go east earlier and may still do it, but right now that’s the plan. If anything changes I’ll be sure to let you know. Wasn’t Mo great today? I’ll be posting about him a little later.

  6. Jane,
As you know I am not a huge “stat” guy, but I decided to check into the possible NYY versus Washington Nats series records since you brought it up. Interestingly enough, the teams have played 6 times since 2006 in both ballparks. And by coincidence, both series were on the same months ( June) and dates (16-18th). Another wild fact is the Yankees lost both series 2-1, plus the Nats blew the first game of both series before winning the next two games.
I know this is not the kind of “debbie downer” vibe you wanted to hear about the Washington/New York series, but it shows there is a nice bit of competitve nature in the series, possibly with the Yankees seeking a bit of satisfaction in this Spring game…..

  7. Jane Heller says:

Thanks for doing my research for me, Renegade. LOL. I was too lazy to do it myself, as you can see. So the Yankees did lose all their series with the Nats. Interesting. I would guess that the Nats play up when they play the Yankees and the Yankees lack intensity. But what do I know.
