Yanks Save Face Vs. Orioles

April 9, 2017

Somebody had to stop the Orioles from winning every game this season. Why not the Yankees? In today’s finale, we did just that: beat them to prevent getting swept in Baltimore.

Aaron Judge had a good day. So did Holliday, Castro, Torreyes and Ellsbury, among others. But the bad news involved Gary Sanchez. Just when he was getting on track at the plate, he was pulled with a bicep strain and put on the DL. And his baby bomber cohort, Greg Bird, is also ailing.

Injuries. Here we go again. I know, I know. They happen. They’re part of baseball. They’re just so disappointing.

On a positive note, tomorrow is Opening Day at the Stadium. Maybe – again, I’m trying to stay positive – Pineda will have a decent outing and mow down the Rays. If not, I fear he’ll be booed. I’ve been noticing on social media that fans have lost patience with him. I hope he proves us all wrong.

Hi Jane – so glad you and baseball are back! I am back, too – from an eight day trip to England that caused us to miss Opening Day and the first four games of the season (I was okay with that, though, especially after I checked the Yankee scores).

Sunday’s conclusion was a satisfying win after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory on Friday and Saturday. I was especially upset about Saturday’s turnaround at the hands of Betances, who seemed to be taking off just where he’d left off last season. But he had a stellar inning yesterday, as did Chapman. CC seems to be our best starting pitcher right now – I’m with you on Pineda, though. Let’s hope he doesn’t get booed – that will only mess with his head more.

The injuries are concerning but I think Yankee fans are used to dealing with them, they are so much a part of our world. The player I am most excited about is Torreyes – he is proving himself to be a damned good little player! Possibly in the style of a Phil Rizzuto? And the Baby Bombers will get it done when they are healthy, I’m convinced of that. As usual, the big question mark is pitching.

It’s easy to switch into panic mode after such a terrible beginning to the season, especially after expectations were high after a great Spring Training, but this is a young team just getting used to playing in the majors and with each other and after they have made the adjustment I am confident we will see some great baseball and, more importantly, winning baseball. There are still 156 games to enjoy – or more, God willing!

P.S. Starting the season at the Trop wasn’t exactly the best but at least we’ve gotten three of those awful games out of the way!

Hi Audrey. Welcome back to you! I hope the trip to England was fun. I wonder if the arbitration and Randy Levine’s knocks put a dent in Betances’s confidence. I hope not. CC really does seem to have learned to how to pitch now that he’s no longer the hard thrower. Pineda? He has so much talent, but I worry he’s a head case. Torreyes is exciting, but I suspect he’ll be sent down as soon as Didi is back. Hoping for a good win today. The weather is perfect!
