Even though the Yankees played great against the Red Sox, they were knocked out of the postseason for real tonight. How to evaluate….
Not enough offense. The team just didn’t score runs. Period. Yes, Cashman sent our key bullpen guys to contenders, but, relievers aside, the hitters just didn’t hit.
It’s sad to be left out of the postseason and I’d rather not make a habit of it, but it’s not a shock. The 2016 Yanks didn’t have the talent or the talent didn’t perform up to potential.
Will the kids turn us into winners next year? Probably not without the addition of key players. But they were the bright spot in an otherwise dreary season. Just the thought of Gary Sanchez makes me smile.
So it’s time to finish up against the Orioles this weekend and wait to see who plays whom in the playoffs. I usually root for the Dodgers if the Yankees are out of it, but this year? The Cubbies have to be the sentimental favorite.
It would have been nice to go into the last series of the regular season with a chance at the post-season if our boys could take 3 from Baltimore, but it’s already over, as you said, Jane. They spoiled Yankees’ fans are so used to being in the post-season every year that even when things improve at the end of the season, most of us are not pleased. C.C. was fabulous last night but what are the odds he’ll stay that good as he ages? Sanchez is in a skid – I don’t know if the pitchers are starting to see what he can and cannot do or if he’s just in a lull but 2 of the foul ball hits would definitely have been home runs if they hadn’t gone foul. The wind in yesterday’s game was really odd too – a couple of Red Sox players would have had home runs if it wasn’t for the wind blowing in field. Oh well – last 3 games. I’m not a baseball fan, I’m a Yankee fan so I really don’t care who wins The World Series but for a family member I’ll say “Go Cubs”.
I don’t think it’s about Yankee fans being spoiled at this point, Diane. The fact is we haven’t made the postseason in awhile and haven’t won it all since 2009. We’re not in Cubs territory, by any means as far as a drought. But in Yankeeville? It’s a dry spell. So I look forward to the future with us having a fresh start, acknowledging the game has changed and that we need to get younger and more athletic.
