More like “The Penthouse Floor Yankees,” despite what Michael Kay calls this scrappy team of cast offs.
What an exciting comeback win tonight to kick off the series at Camden Yards. The O’s always play us tough, despite their pitching woes, so I had a feeling there would be extra innings somehow.
What I didn’t expect was CC’s mediocrity. Is he just having his first half doldrums or was it the result of the rainout of his scheduled start? Who knows, but I hope he snaps out of it soon, because watching him give back the lead was not my idea of a good time.
Watching guys like Adams, Cano, Overbay and Hafner go deep, on the other hand, was very entertaining, as were the huge doubles by Ichiro and Wells.
I keep wondering how long this team can continue to win ballgames, but maybe I should be wondering why I’m suddenly not that desperate for Tex, Youkilis, Nunez, Joba and Nova to come back. (Notice I didn’t say Jeter. He’s always welcome to show up.)
Wow. I made myself go to sleep last night before the end and then debated this morning if I could handle bad news. Wow. My day just got better.
I tried to write in the other day and it wouldn’t let me in somehow .
After a very long drought I was able to watch this game and what a great way to be welcomed back to Yankee baseball on the television screen! One of the things I really love about baseball compared to other sports is that, in the immortal words of Yogi, it ain’t over till it’s over. That certainly proved true last night when we were down by a run with one out in the ninth. As long as you have an out left, though, you have hope.
This team continues to come through and I have to agree, Jane, I almost don’t want to see the stars come back (Jeter excepted, of course). I’m afraid they will change the chemistry for the worse. It will be hard to make it better.
Interesting how Cleveland continues to thrive (against everyone but us) and is leading their division. Could we be meeting Swish and Francona in the playoffs this year? I’d prefer it to Detroit, that’s for sure.
Yes the “bargins” continue to impress. One concern is the continued issues with CC. He seems to be a good #3 or a marginal #2 right now. Kuroda is our #1 right now.
David Adams may be a diamond in the rough. Kudos to Cashman. He has done well.
I was fully expecting the loss once The Orioles took the lead…I wasn’t even upset about it since the losses (thank heaven) have been few. Then, to watch the comeback…breathtaking! These guys are really stepping up…okay, The Orioles closer, who blew his last four saves, helped alot, but still, our boys got the hits when they needed to. And Mariano…again, just impossible to beat. The bad news was C.C. though. I’m just not sure about him this season…I’m not sure if its physical or mental or emotional, but I just don’t feel like he’s our #1 starter anymore. Now we have to deal with Hughes-ey. Let’s hope they don’t have to pull him in the first inning. GO YANKEES!!!
I’m with you, Jane. Except for Jeter, and maybe Tex, I don’t care of none of them come back. Truth be told, I definitely do NOT want A-Rod back. I would like to see Adams get the job full time with Youkilis as backup and DH or pinch hitter. With the Yanks in first place, the stock market hitting new highs, and my garden…well the garden isn’t doing so well, but life is still good.
I agree about Adams, John. He continues to impress.
And yes, all, CC is tough to watch these days. As I wrote, I’m not sure what the problem is – mechanical tweak, fatigue from so many innings over the years, his first half slumps, recovery from surgery, don’t know, but Rothschild needs to get on it.
I don’t think anybody wants A-Rod back at this point, yankeefansince1941. I say that without being one of the “haters.” If he somehow were to regain the abilities he had before the injuries and the PEDs, I’d certainly be willing to give him another chance, but how likely is it that he’ll bounce back? Dunno. Sorry about your garden, but glad things are good otherwise.
Bargain? Yes. Basement? Oh heck no. I ripped Cashman when it looked like he’d lost his way, his mind, and our chances; so I’d better give him his due when he gets it right. Brian, you’ve gotten it right thus far.
All I can say is ha, ha to Michael. He never gets anything right; he always makes negative remarks where the Yankees are concerned, and I am glad he is eating his words. I still say he needs to be replaced. Paul O’Neill was right, he really does remind one of the fat kid at the end of the bench who never gets picked to be on the team.
There you go.
I don’t think Kay always goes negative, Alyce, and I admit I’ve been calling this year’s collection of players a few names myself. But I do love when Paulie tweaks him. They’re fun together.
Jane,
In case you did not notice, Paul loathes Michael Kay. They are not even in the same thought pattern. Be aware, Kay would insult anyone for self gratification because he is unable to achieve it any other way. I pity anyone who has to deal with him on a continuous basis. Thank God for radio. I find myself watching the Yanks and tuning Kay out.
