Our Opponents In The ALDS: The Oreos

October 5, 2012

Well, that’s what I always call them.

As I watched the second half of their game tonight , I was kind of hoping the Rangers would come back and win – for no other reason than I get a kick out of seeing Nolan Ryan sit in his seat scowling. Instead, I guess I’ll have to get a kick out of seeing Buck Showalter stand in his dugout looking intense.

I think it was inevitable that the Yankees and Orioles would square off in Round 1 of the postseason. The O’s have had a charmed season and they, not the Red Sox or the Rays, have been our nemeses. Their pitching has vastly improved and their bats are as lively as ever, and they’re just plain tough. But unlike Arlington, Baltimore will have lots of fans wearing pinstriped jerseys and after so many games at Camden Yards our boys will feel at home. I hope.

All I know is that I’ve been trying to relax since we clinched and now just typing this post is making me nervous. I was so caught up in our winning the division that I forgot the ALDS always sends me into panic mode. It’s such a short series. Every inning matters, every at bat, every pitch.

CC, I’m begging you. Be really, really good on Sunday.

You know, this whole season I saw the Orioles and thought, “Hey, they’re really doing their thing this year.” “Buck’s done it again!” “Those Orioles sure look for real.” “The Orioles are going to battle with us down the stretch for the division.”

And for whatever reason, it wasn’t until I just read, ‘they, not the Red Sox or the Rays have been our nemeses’ that it all finally dawned on me and I came to this very scary thought, “Holy s***! As if the Red Sox and Rays weren’t enough in our division, we’re going to have to deal with the Orioles too next year as a legit opponent!”

Thank you for making me crap my pants, Jane.

I seriously had not given next year much thought at all. But the way it was going in the second half, we should’ve seen this coming a mile away. I had no doubts Baltimore would win the Wild Card game. We’ve all seen enough of them to know what kind of team they are. What may be a bit troubling is the fact that they get these first two games in Baltimore. The ALDS is always a crap shoot, and we’ve seen how home field advantage has ‘helped’ us in the past. (yes, that was sarcasm) So this crazy 2-3 format is either going to be trouble for us, or be a huge advantage. We’re all begging with you Jane that CC has a great start and that we come away with a Game 1 win.

LOL, you’re welcome, YankeeCase. I kept saying the opposite about the O’s: “They can’t possibly keep this up the entire year” and “they’ll fade for sure” and “I’m more worried about the Rays.” But the O’s did keep it up and they didn’t fade (if anything they got stronger as the season went along) and the Rays petered out. So yes, here we are and the ALDS format is terrifying – always. That’s why I wish there hadn’t been a layoff, even a short one. The O’s will open the series at their place, still pumping with adrenaline from Arlington, while the Yankees have been resting and working out. Worries me. But then everything about this worries me, so pay no attention!

Well, now we know. At least it’s a team we’re familiar with.

    Go Yankees.

This matchup will be the battle that will end all battles. Super excited for the upcoming game between two of the best teams in the AL(No offense A’s). It’ll be real cozy between both fields full of Yanks and O’s fans.

Anyone saw the NL WC? That was crazy. Those flying beer bottles take me back…hate those Sox.

We’re familiar with them all right, Sean. And they’re familiar with us. And our record is dead even against them. Should be interesting.

I saw part of it, SBlue. Crazy is right. And I’m still shaking my head at the booing in Arlington of Josh Hamilton. The guy is a superstar and has said he wants to stay in Texas and yes, he had a bad game, but really?
