I Loved The Ending To This One

April 27, 2012

Yes, the laughing lady is back and she couldn’t have come at a better time. I’d been spending forever on the phone with an Apple “specialist” trying to figure out why my new iPhone wasn’t doing anything it was supposed to do, and by the time the game started I was a raving lunatic. Imagine my delight when Verlander turned out to be very un-Verlanderish.

Even though Nova wasn’t having a good night either, once it seemed the Yanks were hitting the ball I had a hunch they’d come back and win the game. That said, I do have a complaint: Raul Ibanez’s defense. It was scary how bad he looked on that triple. I sure hope Gardner gets healthy in a hurry.

Back to the happy stuff, I was just getting our rally burgers on the dinner table when the Swisher-Cano-Tex combo produced the tying run. I was so excited that I accidentally squirted ketchup all over myself, but who cared. Then Mo was his normal perfect self and Jeter hustled his way around the bases and that was that.

I did miss AJ’s pie ritual. No, A-Rod didn’t hit a walk-off, but he played traffic cop signaling Jeter home. Surely that should have ended in somebody getting a towel full.

At some point in the season, one of the players will have to take over pie duty. I vote for Swisher unless, of course, he happens to be the recipient.

Nice win, because the Tigers have been faltering. It was important to take advantage.

So it seems Luke Wilson was on the mound tonight and we were able to get quite a few runs off him. I was surprised to hear that we actually do pretty well against Luke, and that he’s never won in the Bronx. Maybe he’s a mere mortal when he faces the Yanks in the Boogie Down. And that’s why Kate Upton won’t let him into the Perfect Club.

You’re right about Gardner, Jane. We all miss him out there in Left Field. I remember hearing last year about how he was the highest rated outfielder or left fielder or something like that… Some Defensive Metric thing.

(btw, so glad the rally burgers are back!)

Anyways, who else is upset there wasn’t any pie?! The better question probably is, “Who would be the one getting pied?” A-Rod for standing there and waving Jeter home? Jeter for the run? Alex Avila, the Tigers’ catcher, for letting the ball get past? Hmmm… Can we pie Joe West, please? :D

Damn, that was fun! It was a radio game for us and I was hanging on every word out of John Sterling’s mouth in the bottom of the ninth. It’s sad that Jeter’s hit streak ended but he still managed to be in the thick of things –
    that’s our captain!

I second the nomination for Swisher to be incharge of pies from now. He is definitely the natural choice and will perform his duties with gusto.

Interesting about Luke Wilson, YankeeCase. The weather didn’t help either pitcher last night but I’m glad our closer didn’t feel it while theirs did. Again, sad that another streak came to an end with Nova not winning his 15th straight but at least he didn’t lose it.

I was so sure it was a loss with verlander on the mound. He sure is emotional when things don’t go his way. I was going to go to bed but then I was awaiting the happy walk off. If the laughing lady herself can t deliver the pies it seems swisher is th best choice. Yes we need Gardner. I felt bad for their pitcher but not bad enough to go to sleep anything but joyous.3fhu

Verlander was pitching and the Tigers got six runs and we won? Who woulda thunk it??

It was cold and bitter here in NY, so I don’t think the pitchers could get a good grip on the ball. Except for Mo I think because simplicity works the best – he doesn’t rely on anything fancy.

Ibanez looked awful in the field.

Nova’s streak did not come to an end because he didn’t get the loss, so it’s still going.

Jeter’s hitting streak did, which made me sad. I was hoping he’d go on to beat Joe D’s record!

We’ll have to thank the YES announcers for this one. They were admiring the Tiger’s pitcher’s speed and wondering why he didn’t see more pitching time. Guess we found out why. You can throw the ball over 95 miles per hour on every pitch all you want, but if you can’t hit your spots or at least get close to the strike zone, it doesn’t matter.

Weird walk off win and I don’t know who could have gotten the pie. My husband also commented that it was way too cold for pie.

What a very weird way to get a walk off but a win is a win and I’ll take it either way. I hope last night was a sign that A-Rod is locked in. He hit the ball with authority in all of his at bats and we will certainly need him to help carry the offense. Martin’s homer also has me hope he can do just a bit more at the plate than taking walks. Too bad there wasn’t any pie but it was an uncoventional win so maybe next time.

Oh by the way, Jane, I feel so sorry that you had to deal with Apple’s customer service. I work at retail and we always dread having to call customer service for anyone; Apple in particular. Trying to reach them is like pulling wisdom teeth. Very unpleasant! I hope they were able to resolve your iPhone issue.

Luke Wilson. LOL, YankeeCase. He’s a dead ringer for the actor. You’re right about Joe West. He should have been pied but not in a good way for that crazy strike zone. Isn’t it time for him to retire? (The rally burgers were especially delicious last night.)

Melissa’s right, Audrey. Nova’s streak is still intact because he didn’t get the loss. He’s one lucky pitcher.

Normally, I would anoint Joba with the task of doling out the pies, Barbara, because I think a pitcher should do it. But he’d probably hop or skip his way on to the mound and injury himself again. So Swisher is the next best choice (other than the laughing lady herself).

It’s interesting about the cold weather and its affect on the pitchers, Melissa. They’ve all played in much colder temps – like in October – and it’s been conventional wisdom that it’s the hitters who are adversely affected, not the pitchers. I guess this case was different. Ibanez needs to DH, period. I wish we hadn’t shipped out Justin Maxwell or DeJesus or one of the other really good defensive backups. LOL about your husband’s comment. Maybe they should do frozen yogurt pies on nights like that.

Oh, Leo. Don’t even get me started on Apple. Well, since you asked….I bought the new phone Thursday. It wouldn’t sync my contacts or allow me to receive/send email. I was so frustrated because I’d done everything right to transfer data over from the old phone. So I called Apple Friday am, had to hold for 20 minutes, then got a specialist who couldn’t fix the problems after about an hour. She bumped me up to a supervisor who was better and, though it took another hour, he took care of everything – or so I thought! Later in the afternoon I could receive emails but not send them. I called Apple again and this time the wait to speak to a person was a half hour. The guy I got was totally clueless so he bumped me up to a supervisor who took another half hour to fix the problem. I shudder to think what today might bring. And yes, A-Rod is showing nice power. Even his fly out to the wall was a thing of beauty.

I realized the win streak was still intact but wondered if consecutive games were being tallied. With this being baseball I suppose there are two separate statistics for the different situations.

Btw, nothing about Moose Skowron in our local paper, though it is mentioned with their online obits. I think the local Skowron must be a grandson since his name does not match the sons’ named in the obit. Maybe I should pass the info on to the local sports editor since I doubt he knows Skowron relatives live in our community (I expect their Yankee flag to be flying at half-mast today). Of course, he and his entire staff are Red Sox fans so they may not care.

You really should tell your local sports editor, Audrey. It would be so nice if they gave the relatives in town a nice tribute to Moose. Even though he or she may be a Red Sox fan, a baseball legend is a baseball legend!

I would like to see video of Jane squirting ketchup all over herself-the mental image is priceless.

Haha, Ruth. It wasn’t that bad a squirt. (Writers exaggerate for dramatic effect.) But it did get on my Patagonia sweater and I did have to get up and wash it off. I’m blaming it on Heinz ketchup. Sometimes those plastic bottles aren’t trustworthy.
