Anyone Watch Rangers-Tigers Tonight?

October 8, 2011

I caught a few innings. My random thoughts:

  1. Rain delays are still the pits.
  2. Rangers fans wave towels as manically as Tigers fans.
  3. Verlander didn’t look as intimidating as he did against the Yankees.
  4. I kept wishing we were still playing.
  5. Terry Francona doesn’t have a big future as a broadcaster.
  6. Joe Buck is still terrible.
  7. The game was a close one but I doubt the ratings will be any higher than reruns of “Law and Order.”
  8. I was happy that Austin Jackson knocked in Detroit’s two runs, since he used to be “ours.”
  9. Ogando needs to get that large facial cyst examined.
  10. I prefer teams that wear blue to teams that wear red.

Mostly, I was bored stiff.

I started yesterday running a 5K Apple Run (finished 2nd in my age division!), tried not to think about baseball. Turned on the MLB channel in the afternoon just to get a quick fix of guys in uniforms batting balls. I miss our season already! I miss turning on YES in the evenings at 7:00 – I might even miss the FOX Saturday broadcasts! I go through this withdrawal every year. I wanted to watch last night’s game, but because of my morning activities, I fell sound asleep before the game. I will try today. God’s speed to my other fellow baseball junkies!!

Naaah. We went to a petite dinner party…just us, the inviting couple, and a friend of theirs who was recently widow(er)ed. We kicked around many non-sporting topics (all they follow is football), and eventually I was able to draw on my new knowledge of upcoming movies, thanx (in part) to YOU. The widower guy said that “Ides Of March” got a blah review in the Wash Post; I was able to counterpoint by quoting George Clooney himself, thanx to our ‘Special Inside Access,’ courtesy of She-Fan…!

Oh yeah…baseball. Caught a little bit of the game (and a LOT of rain) when we got home. Speaking of BLAH…what an empty feeling it is, watching the team that beat yours and knowing yours coulda-woulda-mighta-shoulda been there. Esp. Game 1. Didn’t know/care who to root for, or against. My only dog that’s left in this hunt is the Brewers. But when Rain Delay II held ’em up, with Avila due to bat w/bases loaded-2 out, I figured that if I were him, batting sub-.100, I might swing at the first pitch when they returned. But it wasn’t compelling enuf to stay awake for & watch, so we switched it off and went to bed. This morning, it turns out that’s exactly what he did. Hard groundball out, rally dead. Too bad, so sad?…still don’t know if I really care…

i watched a little but i only stay up late for the yankees. the games are so much more interesting when you have an emotional investment. i didn’t feel like crying today when i heard empire state of mind in spin class. it felt like a break up when you know you are healing when you can hear the music that used to make you cry. i remembered that we won it just two years ago and we can’t win every year. we sure had some ups and down this year.
now i’ll get back to more reading and maybe making plans again to see people.
it’s good to hear others are going through withdrawal too.

Haha Ogando’s cyst is pretty nasty. And Francona… I turned on the game and was shocked to see him as one of the two broadcasters. Just as well… Tim McCarver is from Boston too I think.

It’s amazing how we have our routines during the season, Kathleen. For me the games are on at 4 pm, so I try to wrap up my afternoons early and get settled in front of the TV. I have to admit that it’s nice to have a longer day without rushing home to watch a game, but I do miss our Yanks.

Yeah, the Ides of March didn’t get raves, Dave, but I still think it’s worth seeing. Reviewers didn’t seem to think there was enough “there” there, but I was plenty entertained. Glad you had a nice evening. So you’re rooting for the Brewers? Their series should be interesting since there’s bad blood with the Cardinals. Those two teams have brawled a time or two.

Good, Barbara. No crying today. That’s progress! Yes, we can now have a social life and see movies and read books. That’s the positive side of losing.

McCarver is from Memphis, Christiaan. Haven’t you noticed he has a southern accent? LOL. He had surgery so Francona is filling in for a couple of games. I guess it’s a move by Fox to get Red Sox fans to watch and pump up the ratings.

Ditto to all your points. I fell asleep and then shut the game off at the rain delay.

interesting rain delays this year: this one with the bases loaded in a game, and ours that time CC was lights out.

It is interesting to see how different teams handle things. The tigers and rays seem to pitch their pitchers as many innings as possible. I Mentioned that during a rays game and my husband said “that’s why they don’t have any pitchers over 30.they use them up and ship them out.”

And the brewers post game was sure different. I’msure ol’ bud Zelig wasn’t too happy with tony plush yelling “fuck yeah”at the crowd.and prince just blowing off the reporter. I actually found it a bit refreshing. When they’ve just won a big game they want to celebrate, not answer inane questions about “what does this mean.”

I was wondering the same thing about Selig and the “good of the game” and the behavior of Morgan/Fielder, Melissa. The teams really do seem to dislike each other in a kind of old school/new school way. Morgan calling Pujols “Alberta” was pretty funny.

Melissa, is that what he was saying? My perfect, innocent big ears thought he had said, “Huck, yeah! Huck!” Just thought it was a Milwaukee or Mid-West thing….

    ………………………………………………..hehehehehehehe ;)

Jane, to your tenth point : Can the Rangers just pick a damn color already? You can’t have both red and blue caps! Stop being so bi-polar people! (says the bi-polar/OCD/depressed/can’t catch a break writer! :P lol!!)

That’s so true, YankeeCase. The Rangers are totally bipolar in their uniform colors! I’d forgotten that. Let me amend my point then and say I don’t like them in either color (except for CJ Wilson since he could become a Yankee this winter).

I was thinking the same thing. I think CJ would be pretty awesome in pinstripes…. CC, CJ, Nova, a rejuvenated Hughes… sounds like a pretty good rotation. Maybe AJ has figured things out? I’m sure small offers to Colon or Garcia will be made for a return if we don’t get CJ.

Hey did anyone see relief pitcher Lance Lynn for the Cardinals? I thought I was looking at a Joba doppelganger! I mean it was uncanny how much he looks like him! And not just his face, but his build, his delivery, his mannerisms, even his number 62! Does he have a long-lost twin no one else knows about? Did he bump his head, resulting in amnesia, and is now a pitcher searching for his true identity? Is he on secret ‘loan’ to the Cardinals with the injury as a front? The beard as a disguise isn’t fooling me. I know St. Louis isn’t too far away from his native Nebraska….

I don’t remember seeing Lynn pitch, YankeeCase, but I googled him and found some photos. While he’s got Joba’s roundish face, I wouldn’t exactly say they were separated at birth. But I’ll be sure to check the mannerisms and delivery! Do I think AJ has figured things out? No. I think we’ll see the same inconsistency next year. I just hope it’s more good AJ than bad, especially since we know how well he’s capable of pitching.

CJ cannot come to the Yankees. I’d get too confused. . . CC, CJ, AJ

    Huck, yeah! ACK!

LOL, Melissa. That would be a little confusing, but I’m willing to risk possible initials snafus. He’s pretty good and could slide right in as our #2. Or would he be our #3 behind Nova? Hm.
