Tomorrow Night Will Be Stressful. I'm Here To Help. (With a P.S.)

October 5, 2011

I’m nervous just thinking about turning on the TV for tomorrow night’s Game 5. So in anticipation of the first pitch and the accompanying sweats, heart palpitations, nausea, headache and testy temperament, I went browsing on the web and came up with Seven Tips for Relieving Stress from the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

Here they are.

  1. Allow plenty of time. Being too busy is a big source of stress.
  2. Exercise. It’s a great stress buster.
  3. Get plenty of rest and eat well. You’ll be able to handle stress better when it does come up.
  4. Discuss your problems with a friend or family member.
  5. When stress hits big, take a time-out. A few minutes away from the problem can help.
  6. Breathe deeply — slowly in, slowly out. Think of something pleasant.
  7. Ask for help. If you feel like your stress is just too much, talk with your family, a friend or a counselor.

I translate the above to mean:

  1. Allow plenty of time before the game to get in your lucky clothes and sit in your lucky seat.
  2. Do jumping jacks between innings.
  3. Order a pizza in the third inning. No, two pizzas.
  4. Go on this blog or twitter or watch the game with an actual human.
  5. Walk away from the TV during the commercials (or when TBS shows Leyland in the Tigers dugout).
  6. Think of the 2011 Yankees holding up that championship trophy and pouring champagne on each other.
  7. Call me. On second thought, call 911.

Good luck, everyone, and let’s go Yankees!

P.S. Here’s a pic sent in by Friend of the Blog Peggy. It’s a total stress-reducer: her Yankee fan cat!

This just in: it’s officially Yankee Pet Day. Friend of the Blog Audrey sent a pic of her pooch. Can I hear a collective “Awwww.”

I have my own stress reducer planned.

Leaving shortly for Maine. There is still a wake going on up there and I intend to pass on my sorrow in my own sorted way.

Yankee gear is packed and I can’t wait to do my thing.

Mudville will be rocking tonight and I expect to have a nice breakfast Friday morning at a noted Red Sox greasy spoon in Wells in full uniform.

    I live for this!

nervous already and so many hours to go. off to run for a couple of hours to let our the stress and visualize us winning. i will wear yankee shorts when i run and eat a lot when i am done so i think i’m taking care of most of the ways to handle stress. including writing here since i have little support around here for this stress. yesterday i told my normally incredibly supportive and responsive husband about granderson’s great catches and the response was dead silence. i loved watching those catches over and over. i hope nova is up to the challenge as he appears to be in his press conference and the bats stay alive

Don’t forget the alcoholic beverage of your choice….there’s a big bottle of white wine chilling in my fridge just in case. Hopefully you’ll be able to uncork some bubbly and get doused. Let’s go Yankees!

Thank you, Jane, for always providing a forum for #4. I’m not ‘fluxxomed’ yet, mainly because for the past week I haven’t been able to work because of all these games, so now work is in crisis and is keeping me from worrying about tonight’s game….sigh…almost something. But I’ll be in my seat by 7:30, ready to go. LET’S GO YAN-KEES…..CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP!!!

I will be watching from the Stadium, after receiving a text message from my mom after Game 4’s win insisting that we go to the game to “help them win”. She passed down her crazy sports fan genes down to me (mostly through hockey), but I converted her from a Mets to a Yankees fan!

I woke up nervous. This is our game to lose, and we need to advance…. I’m wearing the same shirt I’ve worn for the last 2 wins, hopefully it doesn’t let me down now!

Deep breaths everyone… but not too fast ;)

I’m planning the once-lucky raspberry sauce-hot fudge sundae in the Yankee cap bowl for my game snack. And I promised Donna I’d stop by and see her at work tomorrow so we could do a happy dance together. Now I’m going out for a walk with my dog. Maybe a little yoga later will also help. At least it will be a pre-emptive strike for the sundae.

Hi Jane & Fellow Baseball Fans….

I’ll be at the Stadium too…along with my daughter and her b/f …LOUDLY cheering the boys on. I’ll have on my Yankee sneakers, Rodriguez All Star Jersey, Yankee Sweatshirt (supposedly getting chilly later on), Yankee Jacket and wearing my Diamond Yankee Pendant. Unfortunately as I’m a partial plan holder I don’t get to sit in my own seats but I’m close to my seat so it will have to do. The best news (besides the Yankees winning) …NO RAIN !!!!! Here’s to young Mr. Nova pitching the game of his life and the Yankee bats thumping the ball all over the place. I’m so excited…I can’t wait for the day to end and the game to start. If …no make that WHEN …the Yankees win…I have tickets to the lst game of the ALCS. I also have the 7th game but I’m hoping I get a refund on those because the Yankees finished it off in four… :o).

Wherever you are watching …ENJOY !!! LET’S GO YANKEES !!!!

    Go Yankees 2011 !!!

First up – sorry about the technical difficulties in case anybody’s been trying to get on the blog and leave a comment. It’s been “down.”

Have a great time in Maine, John, and TRY to stay out of trouble. I’ll picture you having that happy breakfast tomorrow morning as a stress reducer.

All those stress reducers sound like good ones, Barbara. I’m planning to go for a nice long walk before the game since yesterday’s rain has given way to sunny skies here.

Yes, alcohol is essential, ladyjane! And I only hope I have the opportunity to soak myself in bubbly for a pic as well as drink some in celebration. I’m done with the goggles though.

Work is the perfect distraction from baseball, Ruth, although I think it’s supposed to be the other way around. LOL. Just keep on doing your thing until game time and then we can get nervous for real.

Woohoo, Rachel. Very cool that you’re going tonight. Sounds like your wardrobe is ready. Yes, deep breaths but no hyperventilating!

I remember that yummy sundae, Audrey. Smart move. And walking, yoga – both excellent choices for the day.

Peggy, I know we can count on you for being there and being LOUD. It doesn’t matter that you won’t be in your regular seats. Just being there is a plus. Your kitty is sooo cute and I don’t even like cats!

Jane …just for the record …that’s my daughter’s b/f’s sneaker. My Yankee sneakers are pristine …hahaha.

Since the kitten is a she….Derek or Jeter wouldn’t work so we decided DJ was the ticket. I was heading to work one morning and this itty bitty tiny white puff ran over my foot. No other cats or people were in sight and I was so afraid she would be run over by a car. I picked her up and took her to my house. Not knowing if she had fleas I put her on the tile floor in the bathroom with some fresh water. My daughter was on her way to my house so she picked up a bunch of necessities including flea shampoo. She shampooed and fed her, set up a litter box (which she used right away) and the rest is history. She is just so darling and smart as a whip. She’s loving and affectionate too. I just adore her. Naturally …she’s a Yankee fan… :o). She sits on my lap and watches the games with me. Tonight she’s on her own tho’ since I’ll be at the game.

Thanks for posting her pic …I figured it would bring a smile or two ….

Today is going too slow for me ….grrrrrrrrrr

    Go Yankees 2011 !!!

What a cute kitty , Peggy, and what a sweet story of how she came to be yours.

When we got our dog ten years ago I wanted to name her Jeter (I think female dogs can get away with non-female names and I couldn’t help but think how much her name would bug all the Boston fans around here). But when she arrived she was such a roly-poly little thing we just couldn’t see her as the tall, sleek dog the name Jeter would better fit. Just as well because she never did grow up to be tall and sleek. She’s an English chocolate lab, not an American one, so she is shorter and stockier. We named her Madison, which fits way better. She has a nice young chocolate lab friend across the street, however, who would make a perfect Jeter. If I can find it I will send Jane the picture I have of Madison in one of the kids’ Jeter jersey, taken during the 2009 WS. She didn’t like having it on but the picture was worth the hassle.

In LL Bean in Freeport Maine a guy came up to me and informed me that the Yankees Suck. My reply to him was “and when is your team is scheduled to play their next game?”

Checked into Motel and guy ahead of me is a Yankee fan. We are everywhere up here I have found already.

    Mudville do your thing!

AWWWWWW is right …Madison is sooooooo cute. I’m not going to burden you with anymore pics but my “grandson” Yogi the Pug has his Yankee Jersey too and he wears it proudly (of course I’m sure you know who he’s named after …lol).

John …you keep giving ’em hell. Naturally when someone says the team that had the most wins in the AL and is in the playoffs sucks…well…I think that says it all about that person.

Leaving the office in about half an hour to head up to the Bronx ….YAY !!!! I promise I will be LOUD and I will proudly represent the she-fans and he-fans of the blog.

    Go Yankees 2011 !!!

Nova looked as tight as a gnats ass stretched over a barrel. Very inauspicious start for he and the Yanks. It will take more than two runs to beat us, I hope. If not, we don’t deserve it, plain and simple. Come on, boys.

I’ll post again when Jane gets her Game 5 recap up, but in a word… wow. If you have to go out, go out like that — tension down to the final pitch. Not like 2004, where it was 6-0 in the second inning and over early. Obviously we’d all have preferred a win, but at least NY went down fighting.

I feel like I aged a year watching and I must have sweated off 10 pounds. So close… but not quite.
