Nunie Gets The Silent Treatment

July 2, 2011

It was very funny the way the Yankees shunned Nunez in the dugout after his homer today, then jumped on him to congratulate him. I hate to keep talking about him, but he’s been absolutely amazing offensively. He told Ken Rosenthal after the game that he’s fine with going back to his utility man role when Jeter takes over, but he’s certainly making sure he gets noticed in the meantime.

Actually, this post should be about Colon. I honestly didn’t expect him to pick right back up where he left off, but he did. He was fabulous. He threw strikes, got ahead in counts, kept the Mets off balance, lasted six innings in his first assignment after the layoff. Wow. Just wow.

At this point, the Yankees have to make a decision about Hughes. I say forget the nonsense about a six-man rotation. Why screw up the rhythm of the other pitchers, who like to pitch on regular rest, just to make room for one guy? Alternate Nova and Hughes. Nova will have an innings limit and Hughes needs to come back gradually, so it makes perfect sense (to me anyway).

The one sour note today was Meat Tray. As someone said on Twitter, he belongs in the deli not on the mound.

The six man rotation is ridiculous to me Jane, like you said, why screw up something that seems unbeatable as of late? It’s just Girardi over managing or over thinking. During a winning streak you don’t mess things up! (I’ve been wearing the same shirt since I went to Yankee Stadium and saw them beat the Rockies btw…) And all this talk about sending Nova down to AAA, what for? Yesterday he showed the gritty guts of a veteran and never blinked. We need guys like that, young guys, Sure Hughes is young, but he gets hurt too often. Send one at least to the bull pen, I don’t want any of these guys to go. I think Garcia’s start is gonna be huge, but I think he has a contract where he can’t be sent down. My brother said it’s only till the all star break, but that’s still two weeks. Colon was insanely amazing today. He said he always pitches well when he gets off the DL, which is good for him cause it seems to be a lot. Grandy hit a homer after a bit of a drought, Cano’s triple was great, but Nunez getting a homer? Icing on the cake…which was nice too since Mitre struggled a bit. Does Jeter have to really come back? (just kidding). But it’s great to have a guy like Nunez around to pinch hit at least, he just needs to learn to throw. You have no idea how big these wins are around here Jane. The Mets have been playing well, they’re 500 team and in 3rd and 4th place and fans have been saying they’re going to the World Series all ready! I guess even they need hope. But I do feel a little bad for them, not only do the Yanks beat their best pitcher, at home, 2 out of three, but also Reyes gets hurt again. Meet the Mets indeed :P

It’s hard to tell what they’ll do with the rotation, seindsfeld. Now Girardi is saying there may not be an announcement about Hughes tomorrow. I guess there’s still a lot of debate about what to do with everyone. I’m sure Nunez will get playing time when Jeter comes back. The Captain will get days off; so will A-Rod, Cano and Tex. Keep wearing your shirt and may it bring us luck in the series finale.

The star of the game was Colonuñez or maybe Bartuardo.

    Or maybe Colonardo?

Colonardo sounds like a painful condition!

yes, just saw that bit of news myself, Melissa. Hughes must be looking sharp for this to happen. I expect the revolving door to stay in motion for the rest of the season. My man Colon was brilliant yesterday, and Nunez, though spectacular with the bat, remains mediocre on defense. If and when he focuses and gets it right with the glove, he could very well be a superstar.

The tarp is coming off the field in the Bronx, nice. I don;t understand why the TBS crew keeps talking about the game being played in Queens

Isn’t it weird to see Jeter in that Thunder uniform?

oh now i get it, DUH, the game isn’t being played in the Bronx. My remarkable grasp for the obvious has let me down again. I bet it’s strange for Jeter to wear another uniform, too, Melissa. I wonder how long it has been since he wore something other than The Pinstripes

I LOVE the silent treatment! In fact, Jeet and A-Rod are the best at playing tricks on their young teammates. I love when the camera follows their antics. So fun! (And Colon… seriously? What is this dude eating to be so good?!?)

I felt kind of bad for Nova, Melissa, but I guess it makes sense to have him continue to pitch instead of working out of the pen or sitting for stretches when Hughes pitches. It’s good to know he’ll be there if we need him, which wouldn’t surprise me. And yes, it was weird to see Jeter in the Thunder uni but I thought it made him look younger!

Um, yeah. The game’s in the Bronx, NYL. Haha. Looks like their knuckleballer is shutting us down again.

Well, Jeter wasn’t there yesterday, Jeff, but I know what you mean. It’s fun to see the vets giving the kids the prank treatment. And Colon is just a mystery. He’s so damn good.
