According to someone named Terez Owens, the couple just returned from Paris and they’re now house-hunting in Miami AND he plans to propose to her on Valentine’s day. I say it’s a bunch of hooey. A-Rod always goes house-hunting with his girlfriends. (Remember the apartment searches with Madonna?) Not happening. Besides, Cameron’s too busy. She’s attached to star in the movie version of my book “An Ex to Grind” and is probably sitting around by herself reading and re-reading the novel 24/7.

The larger question is why would any woman want to marry a professional baseball player? When I was in high school, I thought that being Mrs. Yankee would be the most glamorous, exciting, dreamy thing that could possibly happen. Not anymore. I traveled with the team in 2007 for the She-Fan book. I saw the skanky-looking women lining up at the hotels after night games, dying to jump into bed with the players. Infidelity on the road is a fact of life.
Are there advantages to being Mrs. Yankee? Sure.
Financial security.
Health insurance.
Opportunity to start a charitable organization.
A table at the best restaurants.
A chance to meet icons like Yogi.
Free tickets to the games.
But how about the cons of marriage to an active player?
He’s gone from February to November.
It’s lonely.
You’re raising the kids by yourself.
You’re always wondering where he is when his phone is turned off.
You have to get to know each all over again when he comes home.
Doesn’t sound like much fun to me, despite the perks. On the other hand, if A-Rod and “Cam” really, truly love each other…..Okay, I can’t even type that. It’s not happening, I’m telling you.
So is this your new site? Where’s the Yankee blue?? Very sleak though. “skanky-looking women?” thats harsh Jane! I’m sure they were all very respectable women just wanting an autograph. :D And since she actually has a job, she could film movies from February to November. :D This is DOOM for the Yankees though! With Kate Hudson pregnant, and Cameron sticking around, getting to November is looking less and less promising. Hopefully the baby will turn out to be Arod’s and they’ll have to get married…Kurt Russel will insist. Snake Plissken style. ;D
I’ve had this site for years, seindsfeld. I just moved “Confessions” over here. You have quite the imagination regarding the big romance. I’d let Kate Hudson go though. It was nice while it lasted.
Yeah. I think _dating_ a baseball player is probably a heck of a lot of fun, provided a girl has no illusions about the whole thing but being married to one does not sound like much fun to me. I’m sure they don’t all cheat, but the percentage of those who do is probably very high. At that point serial monogamy is much more honest. Cameron Diaz is going to star in your movie? That’s really neat. I loved her in The Holiday and that’s kind of the mixture of romance/comedy/drama/light and serious that I’m picturing…though I haven’t read the book yet :).

Personally, I hope it doesn’t happen. I see the relationship going the way of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe minus all the roses at Cameron’s grave after she dies. I hope A-Rod finds happiness in a relationship but I don’t think he’ll find it with a high profile celebrity. Plus, the only thing that I want A-Rod to be concentrating on in February is hitting and fielding baseballs.
Don’t know why, but all these celebrity romance things leave me cold. Like my ol’ dog, I just don’t care…roll over, snort, and snore some more. BUT if it involves a Yank…well, gotta at least pay attention. LIke Scott says, the only ballin’ I want A-Rod to be doin’ is between the lines on the diamond…
She-Fan, you have the “Baseball Annies” pegged. One story I heard about Cal Ripken back in the day was how he came back to his hotel room after a road game, only to find a nubile young lovely in a state of total undress sprawled on his bed. According to the story (the legend?), he simply told her that he wasn’t interested or into that, so please get dressed and leave. Well, at least the anecdote SOUNDS nice…and why not believe it…? One wonders how many (if any) would have behaved the same…
And let’s hope that there’s still plenty o’hope for “An Ex” — with Cameron Diaz, James Cameron, the Cameron Crazies (college hoops fans)…WHOEVER!!
One more plus-you could have your own gym at your house. I’m not talking about a workout gym, I,m talking about a gymnasium. they showed the one Andy has at his house. I would love that and an indoor lap pool!
Seriously though, it must be very tough to basically be a single mom and to never know if people only want to get to know you so they can meet your husband.
I didn’t even know they were together (see, I don’t get out much myself). He can have Cameron. It’s Derek I’m jealous of… I mean, I’m jealous of Derek’s girlfriend. Er… yes. That’s right ;-)
I don’t think they will get married. I don’t know, somehow I don’t get the feeling of “true love”. She’ll be filming a lot (hopefully “An Ex to grind” soon – ;) ) and he’ll be playing a lot (hopefully!), so they don’t have much time together and it’s not like relationships of celebrities last very long. And if they don’t see each other very often then there’s no way they stay together. I guess we have to wait and see.
Ok, it’s probably not something a woman really wants like being alone and raising the children on her own. But most of the time the wives know their husbands before they became pro’s and how long does a baseball career last? Like until the age of 40, maybe 42 if they’re lucky. You still have another 40/50 years together. So if you’re really in love and he doesn’t cheat, there’s a good way it can work out…so I’m up for it. ;)
I agree about dating a ballplayer, Kristen. Trips to Paris. Trips to Mexico. Watching him at games. All very glamorous. But a day to day proposition must be tough. Cameron Diaz is “attached” to star in my movie, which means we have a long way to go for that to happen. First the screenwriter has to deliver the script, which was supposed to be by Christmas. Then Fox has to like it. Then they have to decide to greenlight the movie, then they have to see if Cameron will be available….Lots need to happen before she’s on board.
I don’t know that I’d compare the relationship to Joe and Marilyn, Scott. Joe loved her so much that he never married again. I doubt A-Rod will be with one woman for the rest of his life; just not his “way.” But I hope he focuses on the game too. Nick Swisher managed to be involved with an actress and play well, and now he’s married to her. It can be done. I just don’t see it with A-Rod.
That’s a very sweet story about Cal Ripken, Dave. He does have a reputation for being Mr. Family Man so maybe it’s true. I’m not saying all the guys cheat. I’m just saying there are way too many temptations out there.
I saw Andy’s gym, Melissa, and I couldn’t believe how big it was! His kids must have a blast in there. I’d rather have an in-home movie theater.:) Very true about never knowing if people want to get to you because of who your husband is. On the other hand, actresses are in demand in their own right so I doubt Cameron would feel slighted.
They were together, Jeff, as in “going out” a few times. Then word was they broke up. Now they’ve been seeing each other again. And we’re supposed to believe it’s true love?
Exactly my point, Nadine. Doesn’t seem like true love to me. You raise a good point about the wives though. They did meet their guys before they hit the majors in many cases. I know some who were high school sweethearts. Andy said he was a young teenager when he met his wife. So yes, they were together before the fame. And they’ll be together after the fame. So there’s plenty of potential for happiness for the right couple.
Hi Jane. I just bookmarked your new blog address so now I have easy access to your new home. I finally found myself a job! It’s only part time for now but of course it’s better than nothing. I’m looking to get another job to supplement my income. But as for A-Rod and Cameron, who knows. All I hope for is that if he stays with her, she can bring him some of that good luck charm like Kate Hudson did back in 2009 when he had that memorable postseason performance. I also doubt he’ll stay with her long term as well. But out of all the baseball wives, I think Laura Posada is one who has nothing to worry about. Not only is she extremely attractive and much better looking than any skanky woman that would try to sleep around with professional athletes, she’s also successful on her own. She would be just fine on her own should Posada be stupid enough to ever cheat on her (although I very much doubt it will ever happen).
I don’t think the actors ever actually read the books upon which a movie is based. You’d know better than me, but if they read the script, you’re lucky.

Congratulations on the new job, Leo! Part-time is absolutely better than nothing. Very proud of you and glad you found your way over to the new blog address. I’m starting to think the Kate Hudson lucky charm thing was over-rated. A-Rod does better in odd years, and since we’re in 2011 he should have a great season – no matter which woman he’s with! I think Laura Posada has nothing to worry about because Jorge is always with Jeter when they’re on the road. Those two hang out like brothers.
I was kidding about Cameron reading the book, Paul. (That’s why the laughing lady was there – hello?) I know Julia Roberts was a fan of “Eat Pray Love” even before she was cast in the movie, but it’s pretty rare for actors to read books, period. Getting people to read anything in Hollywood is a neat trick.
I heard an interview with Sigourney Weaver where she said her daughter read the book “Holes” and told her she had to be in it. She was GREAT in the role.
There are exceptions, Melissa! But trust me, nobody out here reads. It’s a victory if you get them to read an email.
ok Jane here’s a tid bit I don’t often share for you – my 1st hubby was my high school sweetheart.
I was there when he tried out for the Cleveland Indians – I still have the photos of gaylord perry throwing him grounders in ’74. He skipped college and went right into the minors.
By the time we were married he was cut.
I have very early experience of the thought of being a ball players wife.
Thankfully it didn’t manifest itself the way he wanted it.
The old adage, thank God for unanswered prayers, comes to mind here.
Wow. Thanks for sharing that, Peg. So you came thisclose to becoming a bona fide baseball wife. Interesting. I wonder how you would have felt about it, had he made the majors. He must have been very disappointed in any case. I can only imagine the “high” of getting a tryout with a club like the Indians and meeting the guys and then the “low” of getting cut. But as you say, it must have been for the best.
just a quite note – I hated it Jane. Although only the minors – well you’ve see Bull Durham. Besides I am a die hard Yankee fan it would have been hard to have to root for another American League Team….tee hee
Ah, yes. I saw “Bull Durham” so I get it, Peg. Not the life I’d want. And so right – you would have had to root for the Indians! That would have required an excellent acting job.
